Holy grail found by librarians?…
Four weeks into the trial of two discovery services, EBSCO and Summon, which offer a single box to search our databases, e-books, full-text journals and the library catalogue, and opinion is divided on which of the two will best meet our needs.
The tools provide the best of both worlds: the ease of a google-type search facility combined with results from academic resources subscribed to by the university.
What isn’t in doubt though, is the enthusiastic reaction from academic staff and students to what librarians consider to be the holy grail of library resource searching.
‘It is absolutely brilliant!’
‘A great starting point for a search’
‘This is the way forward for the future. 10/10 – A must for Edge Hill’
‘Much better than searching through different databases’
While we have had a great reaction so far, we would welcome further opinion and feedback from you so that we can make an informed decision on the benefits of purchasing a discovery service in the future.
The trial continues until the end of May.

Emerging Technologies
This week sees delivery of the first in a series of sessions on Emerging Technologies from the Learning Technology Development Team:
QR Codes: Bridging paper and web?
Have you seen code blocks similar to this appearing in magazines, on signs, buses, business cards, or on just about any object about which people might need information? Have you wondered what they mean or how they can be read?
This 1 hour interactive workshop will introduce participants to the world of Quick Response (QR) Codes – these are 2D barcodes that can be scanned with a smart‑phone, iPod Touch or similar. QR codes are flexible – the information embedded in the code can contain just about any information you want – text, a web address, contact information or can even send a text message.
There are still places available, so if you want to find out how you could benefit by using QR-Codes follow this link to reserve your place:
