• Returning to Learning

    Are you returning to education after a break? Does the thought of studying again fill you with trepidation as well as excitement? Are you anxious that you won’t be able to ‘keep up’ with other students?

    Been away from education for a while? Returning to Learning UniSkills workshop offers a time and space to meet other students who have also had a break from study.

    You are not alone! Students who are returning to study after time away sometimes feel that their academic skills are ‘rusty’, and worry about whether they will be able to remember how to undertake academic study, or write assignments. However, research shows that students who return to study after a break from education are often found to be more motivated, self-determined, focussed and hard-working (Hunter-Johnson, 2017; Kasworm, 2018). Our experience has also shown that given the right encouragement and access to support, all students have the potential to achieve, regardless of their age or stage in life.

  • ? Sharing admiration for the Teaching Online Reading Group: @EHU_TORG.

    The journey so far – blog number 1…

    In the beginning…

    In 2020 the Teaching Online Reading Group (TORG) for academic staff members was launched, via MS Teams by Dr Claire Hawkins, Senior Lecturer in Primary Computing Education and Sonia Edwards, Academic Engagement Manager in Library and Learning Services.

    The aim is to provide a space to discuss user-friendly, research-based articles about online teaching and learning. Providing a valuable opportunity to actively and critically consider what it means to teach in a virtual world.

  • The Mystery of the Hobbit Door

    It all started with a tweet…

    This screenshot shows a tweet by Alyson Brown @interwarcrime and reads, This is a small side door in the main building at Edge Hill University. It is commonly called the Hobbit door and has been for a long time, but I wonder how long? It is a 1930s building. There is a thoughtful face emoji at the end of the tweet. She has added two photographs of the so-called Hobbit door. One from the outside showing a brown wooden door set into the stone facade of the building, and the other from the inside, at the bottom of a stairwell.
