What do you need to do at least once every ninety days…?
I’m sure there are many answers to this, however the key thing you need to do every ninety days with your university network account is change or update your password. As some of you are coming up to the dissertation deadlines, or a large number of deadlines all at once the last thing you need to happen as you make your final amendments, is to be locked out of your account.
If your password has reached 90 days, you will be promted by a message in the GO portal as you try to logon, that your password has expired. Please make sure you follow the instructions. You will need a brand new password and you have to enter twice to confirm.
Or you would like to change it more regularly and keep the password moe secure you can change it within your settings in the GO portal.
Login via the Go Portal.
- Once logged in hover your cursor over your own name in the top right hand corner and click on settings.
- You will now have the option to change password via the forth option listed, perhaps unsurprisingly the heading is named password.
- The password you select willneed to be a minimum of 8 characters in length – it can be letter and numbers, but it must be different from your last 10 passwords.
N.B. When you change your password you will need to log back in with your new password.
Also you can set yourself a safety net from within the settings page, from the second option listed Settings. From here you can provide an alternative email account e.g. yahoo, gmail, or Hotmail account. This means at any time of the day or night you can reset your password should you get locked out.
Your student number and password allow you to access all of the following:
Your University email account
Your Learning Edge account
Your library account to renew books
Wireless networks on campus
eBooks and eJournals
Eduroam wireless network available in over 900 UK locations listed here www.eduroam.orgIf you have any issues logging in or navigating around the GO portal,

Student Led Teaching Awards – now including personal tutors and support staff.
- Are you an excellent teacher?
- A personal tutor who goes above and beyond?
- Or are you a member of support staff who gives excellent support and great customer service?
- Well now your students can say thank you!
- For the past two years the Student Led Teaching Awards have been run by the Students’ Union and ultimately they result in the Chancellor’s awards which are given out at the summer graduation ceremonies. This year they have been extended to recognise the excellent support from personal tutors and support staff. These are three separate categories.
- Nominations are already open and will close on 10th May. The winner will be decided in June and will receive a prize of a personal development grant. Students nominate by filling an online form and can nominate as many staff members they wish.

Can’t find the book you’re after? We’re here to help…
What do you do when all the copies of that essential book are out on loan and you don’t have the time to wait for a reservation to come in? Well, don’t panic, there are several things you can do to find other books which may be equally as valuable.
- If you search for the book in Discover More, go into the record of the book and at the bottom of the page there is a section with details of books by the same author and books on a similar subject. These are all books that we have bought, which will be in stock, and which may be just as good (or better) than the book you want
- You can also do a keyword search around your topic, in the library catalogue or Discover More and this will give you details of books on that subject.
- Don’t forget that you can also use Discover More to find journal articles on your chosen topic. These will often be short, to the point and contain plenty of references to other relevant material
So, just because you can’t find the book you want doesn’t mean that there aren’t alternatives which could be on the shelves or available electronically.
What’s more- if you need any help with using the library catalogue or Discover More you can ask one of the librarians at the Ask desk on the first floor of the library. Alternatively you can email [email protected].
