LS0390 RefME PlasmaCompiling a bibliography can be a daunting prospect – one way to help you get the hang of what’s required is to download the Reference Me app (RefME). It captures the citations of the resources you have used and will create a bibliography for you.

If you are interested in using this app here’s what to do next:

    • Install the app onto your device, either through Google Play Store or iTunes
    • Or go directly to the  Reference Me  website

Now create an account and then you’re ready to start.

To create a reference, hold your device over the barcode of a book or journal article, your device camera takes an image shot of the barcode (see image below) and then generates the reference as it would appear within a bibliography. You are given the option to add a citation and to do this you simply add the page number (s) and the citation will appear!

One added bonus is that the app now includes the new Edge Hill Harvard style for you to use. Try the app out and if you have any questions please see staff at the AskDesk in the University Library, Aintree or Woodlands.

  • Do you need to discover more?

    DiscoverMoreblog1

It has come to that time of year when you will be researching for assignments or exams. One of Learning Services’ key resources to support you with your research is Discover More.

We have recently upgraded the tool and there are lots of new features which we hope will help you as you search for information – whether that be books or journals.

Some of the new features of the tool include:

    • Refining your results to books in the library and library location ( you can quickly see books on the subject and which library holds them)
    • Database recommendations – you can see at the top of your results page which database Discover More has found the most results in
    • You get a quick view of the item – hover over the title and check out the panel on the right
    • You can refine by discipline – this is really easy to use and will help you focus more; it also provides you with details of how many results there are so you can see if this is area to focus on

There is short guide which takes you through the basics of searching, refining and then saving and exporting your results.  Take a look at the guide or come and see a member of staff at one of our help desks.  Your subject librarian is also a good contact to have!  Take a look at the Learning Services webpage for your subject, there are full contact details of your librarian.  Your subject resources tab in Learning Edge is also a great starting point – your main databases and journal collections are recommended and also quick links into   the library catalogue and Discover More

  • Student assistants provide peer support

Have you noticed our student assistants, in their distinctive red sweatshirts who are based at the Ask desk on the first floor of the University Library, Ormskirk?

Research at other universities has shown that students can benefit from ‘peer to peer support’, hence the move to introduce student assistants into the library.

Students themselves have indicated that if they have got a query they would prefer to ask their peers first before they would approach a member of staff.

According to The University of Manchester,

‘There is strong evidence that Peer Support has a positive influence on students’             experience of their time at University, both academically and socially.’

The student assistants are trained in the use of library and learning resources, study skills and basic IT functions. They can also help students to understand the physical layout of the library. They offer an additional layer of support to complement the work of the staff at the Ask desk and the flexible support staff.

The student assistant also rove around the campus to support and engage with students outside of the library environment.

Next time you see a student assistant, either in the library or around the campus, and if you’ve got a query, don’t be afraid to ask.
