Dyslexia Awareness Week  14th-20th October 2013

The theme this year was ‘Beyond Words’.  Its purpose was to address the misconception that dyslexia only affects reading, writing and spelling, but also, can impact on maths, memory, organisation, time management, as well as language and listening skills. In addition, there was a strong focus regarding the creative strengths of dyslexia.

During this week, the Specific Learning Disabilities (SpLD) team had a stand in the HUB and ran a competition to identify Famous Dyslexics.  It was an opportunity for the team members to be ‘out and about’ chatting to a variety of people and giving information about dyslexia and the support available at the university.

If you would like any further information, the SpLD team can be contacted in the following ways:

Call to the ASK desk on the first floor of the library

    Email: [email protected]

    Phone: 01695 584372

    Alternatively access the website www.edgehill.ac.uk/inclusiveservices

  • Do you need classroom materials for your teaching placement?

It may be early in the term but if you are working with children and you are looking for materials to take to your placement/setting for use in the classroom you may want to check out the Education Resource Collection.

The collection contains a range of materials from books (fiction and non-fiction), posters, games, dvds, and much more. Some of the non-book materials are kept in interesting looking boxes-do explore them!. Most items from the collection are issued for 12 weeks and can be renewed if there are no reservations so you can plan your lessons well ahead.

We have relocated & improved the collection for this year and it is now housed on the first floor of the University Library. There is a new phonics section, a new storage area for the oversize picture books, study space and some soft seating.

If you want to find out more do visit the Education Subject Resources webpage. You can get to this by going to the Learning Services webpages, www.edgehill.ac.uk/ls, click and the Subject Resources link and choose Teacher Training and Education from the dropdown list. Click on the Resources tab and select the Classroom resources link.

Struggling with reading academic texts and articles?  If you are, come along to our Routemaster session about reading which takes place next Tuesday (22 October). Aimed at developing your understanding of yourself as a ‘reader’ of complex texts, we’ll also consider some strategies that can help you to engage more fully with the reading you do as part of your course.

There are 10 places available and bookings can be made online at: ehstudyskills2013.eventbrite.com
