Blackboard 9.1 upgrade – Summer 2015

The 2015 Blackboard upgrade will commence from 7:30 pm, 12th July (Sunday) to 7:30 am, 13th July (Monday). Blackboard will be unavailable during this period.

This upgrade will provide the annual updates to back-end functionality and security and ensure an even better stability of the system and its components.

Blackboard will be available from 13th July, 7:30 am, but will be deemed ‘at risk’ whilst we verify the functionalities of the upgraded features. This has been decided with the view of minimising disruption and enabling our users to access Learning Edge with the minimal interruption window.

Learning Edge Upgrade: Introducing New Features

As most of you are aware Learning Edge is scheduled to be upgraded this weekend (July 21st-22nd). Once completed you will have access to a number of impressive new features and improvements to existing ones. Over the past few weeks we have promoted what these new features can do and how they can help you expand on current usage.

To help introduce you to what’s new, Learning Technology will be running an online webinar (via Collaborate) at 2.30pm on Wednesday 24th July to allow instructors on Blackboard to become acquainted with the new features and tools.  Anyone can join via a computer with an internet connection, regardless of where they are, you could even attend from the comfort of your own home.  Questions will be taken via the chat box in the webinar.

This online session will be very useful as it will provide you with the opportunity to have an overview of the new Learning Edge and the opportunity to ask questions on how and where you may wish to use the new features and tools. During the webinar, the following new features will be introduced:

Calendar – a unified calendar across all areas enrolled in to see ‘the big picture’ of what is happening in Blackboard.

Discussion Boards – revamped and easier to follow including profile pictures (if users have uploaded a picture or avatar).

Profiles – entering your own details or optionally using Facebook or Twitter to ‘pull’ through basic info about yourself into Blackboard.

Inline Grading – like Turnitin’s feature ‘GradeMark’ the Blackboard Assignment tool now allows online comments, feedback and grading against the actual work in a virtual window.

Global Navigation – quick links for all users to quickly get to key activity in Blackboard.

My Blackboard – still quick access, but more detailed information about the activity including the ability to reply to any discussion forums from the Learning Edge Homepage without having to click into each individual course or module!

Retention Centre – revamped ‘Early Course Warnings’ with much clearer graphics to monitor and keep track of students.

Learning Edge Summer Upgrade: 21-22nd July 2013!

We are pleased to announce that Learning Edge (Blackboard 9.1) will be upgraded this summer. This essential work will not only ensure a reliable service for 2013-14 but will also introduce a number of new and improved features. We’ve listened to your feedback over the past year and can tell you that this upgrade will address many of your comments and suggestions, with improvements to general navigation, the calendar, discussion board, and much, much more!

The date you need for your diary is 21-22nd July 2013 as this is when the system will be unavailable for a short time.

Once the work is complete, you will be able to log in as normal but will notice a number of enhancements. Over the next month or so will be posting in detail about the features you can look forward to but for now here are a few early highlights:

Global Navigation & My Blackboard
You told us you don’t want to have to go to multiple places to keep up-to-date with on what’s going on across all your courses. With the introduction of My Blackboard you will have one place to conveniently access your Profile, Posts, Updates, My Grades, and People. Always present in the top right corner, the new navigation menu will also give you one-click access to your Courses, Settings, Help.

Discussions
An overhauled interface will introduce a much simpler way to look at all the messages in a thread at once. Profile pictures will also help you put faces to names and messages, and instructor posts will be highlighted to help you spot your tutor’s messages in the forums.

Calendar
Dramatic improvements means it now looks great and does all the things you’d expect from a modern calendar. You can personalise your view of the calendar, filter by course, apply colours and labels, move items with drag and drop and export to Outlook or Google Calendar.

Got to be in it to win it! Amazon Vouchers and USB wristbands

The 5th Edge Hill University Students e-Learning Survey 2012 has now been opened for a few weeks for you all to take part in! In the space of just a few weeks, almost 500 of you have already responded and shared with us your experiences and expectations of technology to support your learning, which helps us understand what works and what hinders.

The survey should take around 10 minutes for you to complete, but it gives us a lot of valuable information about the services we provide and ideas of how to make things better for you.

We used the findings from last year’s survey to improve our services to students and we will use this year’s responses to continue to improve existing services and inform new developments. You can view the collection of past survey results at http://www.eshare.edgehill.ac.uk/1348/

It is important to get as many responses as possible to cover the range of experiences and enable us to benchmark against previous years, so your responses are very valuable to us!

This is why, we are giving away a colourful 1G USB wristband to every 20th person who completes the survey. So far we have given away 24 wristbands and have loads more ready to go. There are also three prizes to be won – a grand prize of £50 Amazon gift vouchers and two runner up prizes of £25 Amazon gift vouchers!
