What do we mean by ‘Open Access’?

Open Access is the practice of making scholarly research and literature – available, online, to everyone – for free!

Reading and sharing information freely and fairly can transform the way research and scientific inquiry is conducted. Having positive, direct and widespread implications for society, academia, medicine, science and industry.

How we do Open Access at Edge Hill

The University has open access research papers going as far back as 2000. Edge Hill is committed to producing Open Access research that responds to the challenges we face, both local and global, while staying true to our long-held beliefs in promoting inclusion and engaging with marginalised groups.

Theme for International Open Access Week 2022: ‘Open for Climate Justice

The climate crisis has far-reaching effects, and the impacts are, “Not be[ing] borne equally or fairly, between rich and poor, women and men, and older and younger generations,” as the UN notes. Power imbalances affect communities’ abilities to produce, disseminate, and use knowledge and share responses and address these imbalances. Open Access provides an equalising method to prevent this problem.

Tackling the climate crisis requires a rapid exchange of knowledge across geographic, economic, and disciplinary boundaries. This year’s theme seeks to encourage connection and collaboration among the climate movement and the international open community.

Who organises International Open Access Week?

International Open Access Week was founded in 2008 by SPARC (the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition) and partners in the student community. SPARC is a non-profit advocacy organisation that supports systems for research and education that are open by default and equitable by design.
