Welcome to the first UniSkills Focus On… blog of 2025. In this edition we will be exploring a great video resource called JoVE (Journal of Visualized Experiments) we currently have on a trial basis.

UniSkills Focus On. This month our student blog series explores JoVE.

What does JoVE offer?

JoVE is the world-leading producer and provider of science videos, and their stated mission is to accelerate science research and education. JoVE‘s videos are peer-reviewed by experts in their field, so you can be sure of the academic quality of all the content that JoVE offer.

JoVE is divided into different collections:

JoVE Core: Education contains video textbooks that explain concepts through animations and real-life experiments. The subjects covered in this collection include:

  • Analytical Chemistry
    • Anatomy and Physiology
    • Biology
    • Cell Biology
    • Chemistry
    • Civil Engineering
    • Electrical Engineering
    • Introduction to Psychology
    • Mechanical Engineering
    • Medical-Surgical Nursing
    • Molecular Biology
    • Nursing
    • Organic Chemistry

    • Physics
    • Social Psychology
    • Statistics

JoVE Science Education focuses on the practice and theory of scientific experiments through videos that feature practical demonstrations and covers the following subjects:

  • Advanced Biology
    • Basic Biology
    • Chemistry
    • Clinical Skills
    • Engineering
    • Environmental Sciences
    • Psychology
    • Physics

JoVE Lab Manual has engaging videos that focus on lab work, covering subjects in:

  • Biology
  • Chemistry

JoVE is also constantly evolving as new content is added. During 2025, the following subjects will be added to the video library:

  • Microbiology
  • Genetics
  • Physical Chemistry
  • Biochemistry
  • Developmental Psychology
  • Pathophysiology
  • Calculus
  • Linear Algebra
  • Toxicology and Drug Safety
  • Drug Discovery

What are the benefits of using JoVE?

If you are studying Nursing, Biology, Biomedical Sciences, Psychology, Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Engineering or Environmental Science you will find JoVE a useful resource.

JoVE explains key theoretical concepts and methods in a visual way, which some learners will find more engaging than text. The videos are designed to be engaging and demonstrate complex processes and procedures in a way that can be easier to understand than through text alone. This can help you retain the information, leading to deeper subject knowledge and better learning outcomes for you.

How to access JOVE?

The trial will run from Monday 3 February until Friday 11 April and during this period you will have access to the whole of JoVE.

You can access JoVE by following one of the many links throughout this blog.

Alternatively, you can go direct to jove.com and choose the ‘continue with single sign on (SSO)’ option and search for Edge Hill University in the search box.

Once you are logged in you can start using JoVE.
