Hi everyone my name is Katie and, as a recent graduate, I wanted to share some insights and tips with you that I wish I had known when I first started at Edge Hill. Over the course of my degree, I’ve had chance to explore and benefit from the amazing resources and support offered by Library and Learning Services. In this blog I will share some of the key things that made a difference to me and my student experience.
UniSkills Support: Your Academic Lifeline
UniSkills workshops and one to one appointments are so valuable. The catalogue of free programmes and workshops available at your fingertips are amazing, helping you to upskill your academic writing and boost your marks! Whether you’re struggling with researching, essay writing or time-management, there is likely a workshop or toolkit to guide you through and provide the support and confidence you need. I remember feeling overwhelmed during my first year, especially when it came to finding academic resources and mastering different styles of referencing, but UniSkills workshops were a real help. My main advice would be to take advantage of these recourses early on – they are made for you!
Study Spaces: Find Your Spot
Catalyst offers a variety of different spaces to suit peoples preferred study environments. Whether you prefer a group study environment, a chatty coffee shop or a silent study area, you are covered with the different zones of the library. I found this so useful especially in my third year when I spent the most time at the library. Sometimes I did have to leave my friends and head to the silent study floor to get anything done, while other times I really needed the background noise. Changing my study environment every now and then really boosted my motivation and productivity. I would advise you to explore the different zones to see what works for you. I was too daunted to go to the silent zone until my third year, and it was an absolute game-changer for me. Don’t be intimidated by the silent zone!
You can even book a group room, study pod or booth in the silent area in advance using the Study Space booker to secure a spot in your favourite space.

Final Thoughts…
Reflecting on my time at Edge Hill, I really realise how much these resources shaped my academic journey. My advice to any new or current students would be to dive in and explore what the Library and Learning Services have to offer including UniSkills, TechSkills, Disability Support, IT help, accessing academic information and much more! Making the most of the resources available will make your time at Edge Hill so much smoother.
Good luck and happy studying!
