An Introduction to Neurodiversity

Monday 23 October at 3pm This is an opportunity to meet with Anna Paxman, Learning Support Co-Ordinator, to find out more about definitions, conditions and prevalence surrounding neurodiversity. This is a beginner session intended to allow the participants more awareness surrounding key ideas and to provide confidence in supporting colleagues, peers or family members who may have or are seeking a neurodivergent diagnosis. Anna will demonstrate the Lunch and Learn toolkits the SpLD Team have developed, which are bite sized learning to promote awareness of neurodiversity, neurodivergence and assistive technology. All Things Accessible

Tuesday 24 October at 3pmCome and learn about accessibility at the university and considerations in wider society with our Head of Learning Support Andrew Billington. Andrew is a passionate accessibility advocate and has a keen interest in accessible experiences and technology particularly in relation to study skills and developing strategies. Mindfulness for Study

Wednesday 25 October at 10amWe are increasingly seeing students accessing our services who are struggling with academic-related stress, tension and anxiety. As part of the SpLD Team’s event, Embrace | Support | Empower – Raising Awareness of Neurodivergence, Natalie Reynolds from the Faculty of Education, is a nationally accredited Mindfulness Teacher and she is hosting a Mindfulness workshop to help address worries, alleviate stress and develop strategies you can apply to your academic journey and everyday life. ADHD

Thursday 26 October at 3pm
Join our Learning Support Advisors, Louise and Ellie to explore ADHD/ADD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder/Attention Deficit Disorder). Topics covered within information and activities will include; common and ‘under the surface’ characteristics of ADHD-ers and ADD-ers, strengths based discussions about learning as well as advice and guidance around strategies and tools for learning and life. This session will provide a safe space for staff and students to share their experiences, ask questions and absorb information to better understand, support and embrace themselves and others. Please note, you are not required to share or ask anything during this session.

SpLD Round Table

SpLD Round Table will allow students the opportunity to explore their learning differences within a group setting. Students can choose to share their experiences or not whilst exploring traits of specific learning differences (SpLDs), examine the different assessment processes for dyslexia/dyspraxia, find out about the support available from the SpLD Team and other Catalyst support services, and where relevant, be referred for a formal assessment.

Learning Services have curated a reading list on Libby containing fiction surrounding neurodiversity. There will also be a display in the reading for pleasure section on the ground floor of Catalyst of books written by Autistic women and girls

Lunch and Learn Toolkits

The team have developed a suite of toolkits has been developed for students and staff to spotlight areas we believe have been underrepresented, misinterpreted or undervalued. The toolkits contain bite-sized information synthesised from training, research and best practice to allow staff and students to self-learn. There are links to feedback which we’d appreciate for future developments.
