For Edge Hill staff and students publishing research articles, we have several deals in place with publishers to enable gold open access without article processing charges (APCs). Unfortunately, our deal with Wiley will be unavailable for most researchers from 1 July 2021 – 1 January 2022.

Why the pause on the deal?

The deal with Wiley is negotiated through Jisc, and is subject to a UK-wide fund which is running low. This has happened because the deal has been in high demand for UK researchers. From 1 July, the remaining balance will only be available to authors funded by UKRI, Wellcome, and certain charitable organisations. However, the fund will be replenished on 1 January 2022 and the restrictions will lift.

Can I make my article open access before July?

Yes, possibly. Your research article needs to be either submitted (fully OA journals) or accepted (hybrid journals) before 1 July 2021 to benefit from fee-free gold open access. Funding for the deal will be replenished on 1 January 2022.

I can’t use the deal before July. Is there an alternative?

Wiley are offering a 25% discount on APCs from 1 July. For fully open access journals, simply select ‘UK/Jisc authors (25% discount)’ in the ‘institutional discount’ menu. If you are publishing in a hybrid journal, contact Liam Bullingham, Research Support Librarian for a discount code.

There is also a range of other publisher deals and you can use the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) to find an OA journal which doesn’t charge author fees. See more details on our dedicated page: Open access options for researchers.
