Turnitin – Issues with the Feedback Summary Box

There is currently an issue with entering and editing text in the Feedback Summary Box of Turnitin, this is where you would typically add your general comments whilst marking an assignment paper. So, later in this post we offer a temporary work-around to help.

This is a sector wide issue with many Institutions reporting problems. We have opened several cases with Turnitin and their engineers are working to resolved it, however they haven’t given us any estimate of when it may be resolved.

So in the meantime we are offering the following ‘work-around’ guidance, as at the moment the issue stems from the 5000 character count in the Feedback Summary Box.  ‘Hidden’ code is taking up the extra space and so it’s as if you’ve reached the character limit (but you can’t see it!)

  • Copy (Ctrl+C) any text currently in the Summary Feedback box into a new Notepad page/document. (Notepad can be found in Programs > Windows Accessories > Notepad)
  • Add any extra comments, words, characters that you need in this Notepad document.  Be aware that you shouldn’t exceed the 5000 character limit so you may wish to use Word to find out how many characters you have used.  You can do this by copying and pasting the text into Word then go to Review > Word Count
  • If you do copy and paste into Word, you will still need to then copy and paste back into Notepad to strip out any extra hidden code and remove all formatting.
  • Once all the text is complete in Notepad, copy (Ctrl+C) and then paste (Ctrl+V) into the Feedback Summary box.
  • You can still add comments directly onto the document (for example inline comments and Quick Marks) with no trouble.
    You may prefer in this case to simply use a comment box to leave your feedback summary instead.
    (The comment box has a character limit of approximately 2500 characters but you can create as many of these as you require).

Please get in touch if you experience any further issues that the above does not resolve.

Apologies about the inconvenience

BOS is changing its name to Online Surveys

Since the migration of BOS (Bristol Online Surveys) to Jisc in October 2017, we have been busy updating our good practice guidelines and terms & conditions for Edge Hill users of the service. More information can be found on our wiki pages.

There has been an announcement from JISC that from March, BOS will be renamed to ‘online surveys’.

To reduce any unnecessary confusion to users the changes will be implemented in a phased way. These changes will start in the next few weeks with the aim to complete the changes by summer this year (2018).

These changes will not affect your surveys and the service website address and logo won’t change. For a short time, both names will be displayed on the website. This should reassure anyone visiting or using the service.

Over the next few weeks you’ll notice instances of ‘BOS’ being replaced with ‘Online Surveys’, and later website branding will be updated.

If you would like any further information please get in touch with the Learning Technology Team at

Bristol Online Surveys (BOS) – Essential Maintenance 24th February (Downtime)

Bristol Online Surveys (BOS) will be undergoing essential maintenance on Saturday 24 February, between 09:00 and 14:00.

During this window, it is necessary to take BOS offline for a short period of time.

This work is necessary to improve BOS’s performance and capacity, and will allow JISC to begin rolling out new features in the upcoming weeks.

We know that this is likely to cause some disruption. But we hope that, by doing this work outside normal service hours, any disruption will at least be limited.

Please cascade this message to anyone you think might be impacted.

Learning Edge Blackboard 9.1 – 26th-27th November

Blackboard 9.1 will be upgraded from Sunday 26th November 2017 (11:30 pm) until Monday 27th November 2017 (11:30 am). This is an important system upgrade to enable the new Box View to replace Crocodoc for Blackboard Assignment marking.

During the upgrade window the whole Learning Edge system will be unavailable, we therefore advise you to make some preparations to reduce any impact:

– If you need to refer to online materials in your Blackboard course during the upgrade window, you can download those materials in advance to your computer, laptop, or mobile device.
– If your course utilises recorded lectures and sessions you can download those recordings in advance of the weekend upgrade. You can then watch these recordings on your computer, tv, or mobile device.

– If you expect you will need to view data from your course’s Blackboard Grade Centre you can download it to an excel file. This allows you to view the data whilst Blackboard is unavailable;
– If, during the upgrade window, you will need to refer to student submissions in Turnitin, you can download the files in advance for offline viewing;
– If you need to refer to submissions using the Blackboard Assignment Feature you may download them in advance for offline viewing.

You can find out more about the changes to Blackboard and the reasons for the upgrade on the Learning Edge Blog
