The Difficult Second Blog

Good afternoon one and all

It’s been a couple of weeks since my last blog and thought I’d give you all an update on what I’ve been up to. Once everyone is back in Uni and things are in full swing we shall endeavour to keep our blogs weekly so you can keep up to date with everything we are doing at the SU.

Anyway, my week started very brightly what with a Bank Holiday Monday to top off a weekend that saw my beloved United thrash Arsenal 8-2 🙂 This week also saw the start of my introductory talks with the Dean of the Faculty of Education. Along with Partnerships we are aiming to talk to every single new student arriving into our faculty. It was PGCE Primary students who had the blessing of hearing from us first, and if any of you are reading this I hope you had a great day and were able to take something from my presentation!

In the last few weeks your elected exec (Colin, Billy, Natalie and myself) have been organising some of the campaigns we are hoping to run this year. I won’t say too much just yet but rest assured every single thing discussed so far has been to benefit you as students. After all that is our sole purpose!

The Hub is almost there and the plan is for us to move in next week. Despite what you or I may think about the building, I have to admit it does look mightily impressive and I am looking forward to us moving into a more accessible, visible office for students.

There has been the obvious chuckles and concerns here in the SU about those freshers who are having to move into Pontins in Southport. Despite this however we have been fighting to ensure students get the best from this experience and don’t feel too isolated. As far as I’m aware there are going to buses provided for students both in Southport and in Liverpool for the duration of Freshers Week!

Finally after meeting so many different people over the last few weeks during Open Days, enrolments, induction days etc, combined with us finalising who is doing what during Freshers Week, it’s safe to say I’m now ready for all you students to arrive back. The campus has had its peace and quiet for the summer and I’m sure it’s going to be a whole different ball game in a few weeks time.

I hope you are all having a wonderful summer and I look forward to seeing each and every one of you soon. If you want to ask anything please don’t hesitate to contact me.

First of Many

Hi one and all and welcome to the first of my weekly blogs. Firstly to say thanks for reading this and I hope I’ll do enough in this blog to keep you coming back and reading each week.

The main purpose of this blog is to keep students (yourselves) abreast of the various tasks I am undertaking each week. However with this being the first I think it only right for me to give you a little background on who I am and why I’m here.

I’m 22 years of age and have just graduated this summer with a 1st in Primary Education (QTS) which means I am now officially a qualified teacher. My teaching has been put on hold though as I hold this role for at least a year (which I’ll speak more about in a minute)

I’m originally from Rochdale in Greater Manchester, which it’s safe to say I don’t see myself moving back to any time soon, a statement that will come as no surprise to anyone who has visited or lived there. I am a huge sports fan and player especially football (Manchester United and Rochdale fan). During my 3 years at Edge Hill I played with the Edge Hill Eagles Basketball team and will continue to train with them during the coming year. I’ve been Social Sec for the team for 2 years and Tour Sec for 1 and have been voted into both roles again for this coming year. Outside of this I am a serious film geek and disagree with anyone who doesn’t think The Shawshank Redemption is the greatest film of all time!

Anyway, enough about me and more about my position. As I’m sure you’ll all know because you’re reading this, I am the new Vice President Faculty of Education. The purpose of this role primarily is to represent and support students within the Faculty of Education (FoE). However as a Students Union we are all responsible for catering for every student in any area of student life be it sport, events, nightlife, volunteering, welfare etc. If you have anything you would like to do, anything you feel could be improved or simply want to ask about something then don’t be afraid to come and see me, whether you’re from my faculty of not.

After a month and a half in the role I have already started the task of improving the Secondary Mathematics course after several discussions with students from the course. I have also had meetings with ‘Partnerships’ in FoE to better understand how placements are allocated and what students can expect from them. Placements are something I really hope to improve this year. My main aim this year (and one of the big aims of the SU in general) is engaging with students and ensuring students know what we’re doing. I am planning to run a LipDub event in the near future (see fb group for more details http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=127613200661795) and I’m also hoping to create and sell a ‘semi-naked’ sports calendar for charity which should give all the sports teams something to smile about 🙂

I have many more plans for the year but I think that’s enough for one day and I’m sure you’ll get an idea of what they are over the coming year anyway.

Many thanks for reading and congratulations to those of you who got your results today.
