Updates, Events and Benedict Cumberbatch!

Welcome back everyone!

Yes, Christmas is over and we’ve powered through into 2014. I hope you all had a great New Year – I spent mine in Milton Keynes, being taunted for being Northern. What a way to celebrate *insert sarcasm*. Nah, it was fun really.

So, now that we’re all back and into the swing of things, I’ve got some updates and events for you!

On January 21st, we’ve got our Refresher’s Fair – this is another chance for you to sign up to any sports teams and societies that you might have missed at Fresher’s Fair in September. We’ve got a number of societies coming along including some faculty based societies such as the Health Care Society (always a good one to be a part of if you’re in the faculty of Health and Social Care). Of course, your lovely sabbatical officers (myself included) will be there to tell you about all things that your Students’ Union does for you so feel free to give us a wave or come along and have a chat!

We’ve also got International Women’s Day coming up in March – Kayley and I have got some great ideas and we’re working on getting some special guests so watch this space!

All of us have been continuing work on our Mental Health campaign, which we organised last year (thanks to everyone who donated to Mind and came to speak to us about the Time To Change pledge) and now we’re taking it to the Vice Chancellor to get him to sign the pledge as well! It’s really important that we all work together to help end stigma and discrimination against those with mental health issues in the workplace and in an educational setting. If you’ve got any ideas on how the Students’ Union can tackle the issue of discrimination and stigma, then please let us know!

One final non-uni related thing from me – it’s something I spent all of last year looking forward to and it finally started on New Year’s Day, yes that’s right it’s……SHERLOCK!!! I’m a HUGE Sherlock fan so of course I was ready and waiting for Series 3 to begin and it was so worth it! The first 2 episodes have already been on (I’m sure you can track them down on the BBC website or IPlayer) and the final episode will be shown this Sunday at 8:30pm. I’m not mentally or emotionally prepared for it, I just know it’s gonna pull on our heartstrings and give us all the feels! Anyway, I’m off to answer some more e-mails, plan some more events and swoon over Benedict Cumberbatch.

If you want to ask us anything or tell us what you did over the Christmas break, then leave a comment in the box below, send us a message on Facebook, tweet on Twitter or just come on over to the Hub and say hi in person.

Bye for now!
