Learn to Fly

We’ve been a little quiet on the blog front this month, but that does not mean things have been quiet with the EHU Big Build!

Our Chair Fair was a great success with around 100 of you testing out the furniture and providing feedback, check out our Twitter and Facebook for the results!

We’ve also been testing some interesting furniture over in the Hub and the Library. A HushPod, Sound Station and PhonePod! These pieces are fitted with acoustic panels which reduce the noise from outside and keep conversations inside private.

If you haven’t tested these yet you’ll need to be quick, they’re here until the end of October. You can share your feedback with us via Facebook, Twitter or by emailing Lindsay McBride at [email protected]

We’ve also been working hard to organise the Interior Design Competition! An Invitation to Tender (ITT) has gone out to a number of interior design companies and provides them with a brief about the building, it’s purpose and guidance on the ‘look’ and ‘feel’ the building should have.
The companies will then be invited to attend a site visit in November and present their approach to the project to the stakeholder panel which should include A1 boards illustrating their proposed approach & design concept; a design report and the completed tender documentation.
The panel will be made up of colleagues from Learning Services, Student Services, Careers, The Student Union, Capital Projects & external consultants associated with the build.

We’ve also been getting out and about on campus at recent Open Days with our new exhibition stand and a fly-through of Catalyst! Certainly attracting attention from potential students and their parents!

Everybody wants to be a cat

The cat is out of the bag! Our new name is….

A catalyst for change for the Edge Hill Community, creating a reaction and inspiring change.

Our new name is very fitting for our purpose within the Edge Hill Community. We are one of the first university’s in the UK to bring together the Library, Learning Services, Student Services and Careers all under one roof and offer a single enquiry point for students and staff.

Construction of Catalyst is progressing well and September has seen the installation of stairs, concrete floors and the start of the steelwork on the eastern side of the building.

We also launched our ‘Chair Fair’ this month and if you haven’t been to test them out yet, what are you waiting for?! Library Cat has chosen his favourite!

Grab a few pals and get a game of musical chairs on the go, just don’t forget to share your feedback with us and tell us which is your favourite chair before you leave! (The current winner is Chair No.14, it is pretty comfortable!)

The Chair Fair is taking place on the ground floor of the Library with a selection of 22 chairs from a number of suppliers for staff and students to try and will run until approximately 6th October.

Summer of Steel

It’s the end of August already?!

Summer is nearly over and whilst most of us have had chance for a break and to recharge our batteries ready for the new academic year, work on the new Library, Careers & Student Services building has been constant and the building is going up fast!

The John Turner Construction Group have been appointed as the Principal Contractor for the new building.

Celebrating 110 years in business this year, The John Turner Construction Group was initially formed in 1907 as a building and civil engineering contractor and has grown to be one of the North West regions most respected construction companies. They have worked with Edge Hill on a number of past projects including the Tech Hub, Creative Edge, Business School, Student Hub, 12 phases of student residential accommodation and the Sports Centre.

The primary steel work for the new building is progressing well and construction can be seen across campus! The steel work is approximately 18 metres high and should be complete by mid-October. Following the completion of the steelwork the concrete floors will go down; and keep any eye out for the roof going on shortly, construction for that is due to start in September!

Below is a collection of photos gathered over the last 4-5 weeks showing the progression of the steel structure. You can also watch a time-lapse video of the build from early July to the end of August.

Thanks to Steve Macavoy and Mike Stores for some great photos and Dan Hall for the time-lapse video.

Don’t forget to follow & share your photos with us on Twitter & Instagram!

The Cave

We are very fortunate to have some fantastic technology here on campus including the CAVE (Computer Augmented Virtual Environment) housed in our Tech Hub!

By using what I can only describe as magic (or really clever technology that I have no understanding of) colleagues have created a 3D model of the new Library, Careers and Student Services building which you can interact with in the CAVE.

You can move around the outside of the building, looking at the exterior walls, cladding and roof lights; then fly through the main entrance to the ground floor, up the stairs to the first and second floor housing some of the 250,000 library books, and up to the third floor for silent study and the outdoor terrace with views over campus.

Now some imagination is required, even magic has its limitations! The design of furniture and interior are very basic, giving a clear indication of how space will be used but not how the furniture will look or what colour the walls will be.

Colleagues from Careers, Learning Services and Student Services have been taking advantage of this opportunity and visited the CAVE last week. They were even kind enough to let me take photos of them in their lovely 3D glasses!

A huge thank you to Peter Vangorp for letting us utilise the CAVE and for his excellent driving skills navigating the 3D model.

Can’t Take My Eyes Off You

It’s been a while since our last blog post and so much has happened over the last few months with Edge Hill’s Big Build! We aim to update you more frequently over the coming weeks and months and you can now follow us on Twitter and Instagram for more news and updates! @ehubigbuild

You can also keep up to date with how the build is progressing through our Live Webcam! The Webcam and GoPro are now up and running and both are situated on the top of Creative Edge in the Roof Garden.

The Webcam streams live 24/7 so you can keep an eye on progress at any time of the day https://blogs.edgehill.ac.uk/src/live-webcam/

The GoPro also records 24/7 and will be used to create some timelapse videos as the build progresses. Keep an eye out on the blog and social media for a timelapse video coming soon!

Thanks to Dan Hall in our Media Production Team for setting these up!

We look forward to sharing more news and updates with you as the build progresses.

Under the spotlight – proposed external lighting around the new building

We can now show you the proposed external lighting for the new area. As well as your standard street lamps along the pathways there will also be down lighting  from the new building, foot lights around the grass area and wall lights in the accommodation block.

Here are a few images for you to have a look at…

Looking down on to the new developments

So if you find yourself needing to study well in to the twilight hours then you shouldn’t have too much trouble finding your way to the library in the middle of the night.

Internal and external drawings of the new project

We are excited to be able to share some drawings of the building – both inside and outside.  These give you more detail around how the building might look from the outside – you can see both a view from the HUB, and one from Creative Edge.  The colours aren’t literal but this is giving you a much closer look at the plans so far.

On the inside you can see how the plans are taking shape and most certainly we can get a feel for space – check out the roof lights bringing natural light to the second floor!

And we are off….Edge Hill has a new building project

The new accommodation is the first phase of the development and as you can see the foundations are already on their way!  Here are a couple of pictures which have been taken just a few days ago from the roof of the Creative Edge building.  The running  track has almost disappeared  and earth works for the new accommodation have replaced the sports field!

The building of the new library and student services centre will begin in June.   We don’t have the final designs to share yet but as soon as we do, you will be able to find out all about the project and the progress via this blog.
