The Natural Environment Research Council invites applications for its natural capital synthesis reports, under the Valuing Nature programme. This supports researchers in producing short synthesis reports which define the current state of knowledge to address specific policy or practice needs in the language and format that is accessible to users, and define key gaps in knowledge that should be addressed by further research. Proposals are expected to combine natural, social and economic science, and address one or both of the following:

  • natural capital metrics – identifying the most appropriate metrics for tracking progress and supporting decision-making at national and local levels;
  • evidence of the effectiveness of ecosystem interventions in the natural capital context – identifying the most effective interventions targeting natural resources at producing demonstrable improvements in the benefits experienced at local and national levels.

Proposals may address any topics in terms of the environmental resources and the specific benefit or multiple benefits considered.

Applicants must reside in the UK and be employed at least lecturer or equivalent level at a UK HEI, research council institute or a recognised independent research organisation. Proposals must demonstrate links to natural environment research but may bridge any other discipline interests.

Up to £40,000 is available to support four to six synthesis reports. Activities must be complete by 31 March 2018.
