The Wellcome Trust has created a fund worth £250 million over the next five years to support high-risk research projects in the life sciences that struggle to find funding through more conventional schemes.

The Wellcome Leap Fund will support scientists, technologists and innovators from around the world who wish to investigate bold ideas but have difficulty in obtaining funding. This may be because their proposals are deemed too risky, because a big scientific or technical question must be answered first, or because the researchers lack an academic background in the life sciences.
