Former director of the Wellcome Trust and current government’s chief scientific adviser, Mark Walport has been dubbed the ‘new supremo of UK research’ by the Guardian.
This is proving a debated appointment for a debated new funding body organisation, and perhaps a concern for Arts Humanities and Social Sciences, which do not feature much in his experience. His challenges include managing Innovate UK and the Industrial Strategy Challenges Fund alongside the research councils, and of course seeing UK research funding through Brexit.
