Professor Vicky Duckworth would like to share and celebrate Awor’s inspirational story – reflecting on the power of education to empower those whose voices can often be invisible or / and pathologised in the troubling dominant media discourse.

Awor arrived in England as a teenage refugee from Sudan. In this video, she outlines how central learning in further education colleges has been in her life since then. Education is a golden thread through her narrative.

Starting with learning English and then harnessing education to her ambition to become a Nurse, Awor’s determination shines through. We also see evidence of the ripple effect of her commitment to study as this year her daughter graduated from the University with a degree in Accounts and Finance.
