Busy little bee…zzz

Since I handed my dissertation in and my exams had finished I felt really strange. No more essays to write, no more deadlines, no more revision, (well until September) but a summer to just relax and do absolutely nothing ūüôā

Or so I thought… I spent a week at home being lazy, sleeping in relaxing and found it completely BORING!!! So I decided to get in touch with a local politician to see if there was any work experience or writing I could get involved in.

I helped handing out leaflets after the local elections and attended meetings where they discussed local politics and it was very interesting.

Volunteering is a great way to show employers that you have given up your spare time to get involved in something extra alongside your degree and shows a commitment.

I would definitely recommend it to any student!!

Great news..!

This week iI received fantastic news!!

My application to the University of Liverpool was accepted and they have offered me a place to study a Masters starting this September!! I am extremely happy and proud of myself for receiving an offer for a Masters degree and cannot wait to get started.

The course I have chosen to study is a MA in Politics and the Mass Media! The course draws upon my¬†favorite¬†things from my degree in Criminology. It has a module on human rights, the political economy, the media, international affairs and journalistic practices. I am excited for this new adventure to begin ūüôā

I¬†applied¬†for to study a Masters for the simple reason that I¬†love¬†to learn. I love to learn new skills and discover new things and they only way forward after my BA was to study an MA and then who knows maybe a PHD ūüôā

My future is looking bright I just need to keep up the hard work and hopefully it will soon pay off!

Volunteer Awards 2012

Edge Hill University’s Students’ Union celebrated its first ever Volunteer Awards on Monday! It was a fantastic time for me as it was the day my dissertation was due in so it was lovely to relax in the evening!

The ceremony took place Hale Hall and recognised the achievements of over 100 student volunteers, and the work they have done over the past year to improve relations between students and the local community. I was up for an award for being a student representative for Criminology> I was thrilled to win a certificate recognising my contribution to the university, which was an honour.

Edge Hill University Students Union Volunteer Awards

I received great news this week ūüôā

I was recently nominated as a student rep by the Criminology department to receive an award for hard work and dedication. Yesterday I found out I have now been short listed to the final ten students in the running to receive the ‘Student¬†Representative¬†of the Year Award’ I am extremely excited. The award ceremony is on the 23rd of April 2012 which¬†coincidentally the due date for my dissertation, so it will be a nice celebration to spend the evening at the awards. I will be receiving a certificate for being a student rep but to win the award would be an amazing¬†achievement so I am really looking forward to it and I know I will be very nervous on the night. Will let you know how it goes ūüôā

Wish me luck ūüôā

Student Representative!

I don’t know if I have mentioned this before but i am and have been for three years a student representative for Criminology. The role of a student rep is to be a voice for the students on your course. In first year I introduced myself in the first lecture so everybody knew who I was. Students approach you for all different kins of reasons either, problems with the course, tutors, funding, jobs, or even personal reasons. As a student rep it is your job to be there for students and to help them with any issues or concerns.

Today is my last ever student rep meeting at the Students Union 1-3pm ūüôĀ I have loved my role as a rep and it has helped me develop my communication skills, meet new people, help others, be involved with Criminology and it is great for my CV. I would encourage anyone coming to Edge Hill to put themselves up as a student rep as it is very rewarding and makes your¬†experience¬†at¬†university¬†that little bit more special.

Take every opportunity at university because the rewards are endless ūüôā

Who knew…

A few days ago I came across a you tube video which moved me both emotionally and inspirationally.

Through studying Criminology I have studied crime not only on a local level but also on a international level. The study of international violence looking at Genocide in Rwanda and Uganda to child soldiers across Africa has been a favourite of mine. Studying crime on an international level has allowed me to develop my own personal opinion, and has gave me a greater¬†perceptive¬†on the deep impact crime has and how crimes such as those¬†occurring¬†across Africa go¬†unnoticed. This video proves that it is not just the state that can make changes but when people come together with an idea… anything is possible.

The you tube video is called KONY 2012. It is a short video campaign by a small American charity called Invisible Children. The video aims to make Joseph Kony a man who has been recruiting child soldiers for over 26 years, famous, not to celebrate him, but to raise support for his arrest and set a precedent for international justice.

The video has received over 1 million views and counting. It is a great way to make a difference and to spread the word of what is happening to innocent children in third world countries. Take a look at the video and see what you think.

Spring is in the Air : )

Yesterday was the first sign that spring is on the way ūüôā

The sun was shining, the campus was buzzing with students gathered together chatting, having lunch on the grass and just generally in a happy, upbeat mood. The sun always brings out the best in people and it definitely brings out the best in the campus. The sun captures the essence of the buildings and the beautiful scenery in which our campus is situated.

No matter how much work you have or how bad your day is going, sitting on the grounds of the campus in the sun always helps.¬†I’m excited for this¬†summer¬†on campus, the buzz in the air is exciting and it is just¬†lovely¬†sitting on the grass with a good book chilling out!!

The business¬†building¬†in all its glory ūüôā
