Lots of speakers who now appear confident will admit\u00a0to starting out\u00a0a\u00a0bundle of\u00a0nerves and even doubting their own abilities.\u00a0With this in mind we felt\u00a0it was important for us\u00a0to attend some speaking events, where\u00a0we could witness for ourselves how these skills are developed.<\/p>\n<p>So, we\u00a0began big\u2026 <strong>TED talks<\/strong> are well-known globally for being one of the leading public speaking platforms in the world and they are accessible to the public through independently organised TEDx events. With <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tedxmanchester.com\/\">TEDx Manchester<\/a> taking place on Sunday 3<sup>rd<\/sup> February 2019, it was too good an opportunity to miss! We were able to witness an array of topics, speakers and styles. From the bold and exuberant to the quietly confident, all the presenters captured our attention and inspired us in numerous ways. Having learned how the\u00a0seasoned speakers engage their audience, we\u00a0then moved\u00a0to focus on <em>how<\/em> we could successfully facilitate a safe space for public speaking.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edgehill.ac.uk\/ls\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2019\/03\/TED_three_letter_logo.svg_.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-9978 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.edgehill.ac.uk\/ls\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2019\/03\/TED_three_letter_logo.svg_-300x110.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"110\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.edgehill.ac.uk\/ls\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2019\/03\/TED_three_letter_logo.svg_-300x110.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.edgehill.ac.uk\/ls\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2019\/03\/TED_three_letter_logo.svg_-768x282.png 768w, https:\/\/blogs.edgehill.ac.uk\/ls\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2019\/03\/TED_three_letter_logo.svg_-1024x376.png 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.edgehill.ac.uk\/ls\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2019\/03\/TED_three_letter_logo.svg_-500x184.png 500w, https:\/\/blogs.edgehill.ac.uk\/ls\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2019\/03\/TED_three_letter_logo.svg_.png 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>To do this we decided to tap into current local events with the same ethos. We spent an evening attending\u00a0the brilliant <a href=\"https:\/\/igniteliverpool.com\/\">Ignite Liverpool<\/a>,\u00a0which brings together a range of \u2018creators, thinkers, innovators, makers and dreamers\u2019 to present in front of members of the pubic in an informal and intimate setting. By attending this event we identified the value in\u00a0setting up\u00a0a space where\u00a0students can come together and support each other <strong>without our intervention<\/strong>. We came away idea-poppingly inspired, not only by the incredible range of fascinating topics presented, but by the enthusiastic, supportive and nurturing environment. The event was so motivating, that we are even considered the possibility of delivering our own presentations at the next event in May!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edgehill.ac.uk\/ls\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2019\/03\/light.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-9998\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.edgehill.ac.uk\/ls\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2019\/03\/light-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.edgehill.ac.uk\/ls\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2019\/03\/light-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.edgehill.ac.uk\/ls\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2019\/03\/light-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.edgehill.ac.uk\/ls\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2019\/03\/light-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.edgehill.ac.uk\/ls\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2019\/03\/light-450x300.jpg 450w, https:\/\/blogs.edgehill.ac.uk\/ls\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2019\/03\/light.jpg 1351w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>The combination of seeing public speakers on the big stage at TEDx Manchester, and the small stage at Ignite Liverpool, helped us to really appreciate the need for a small, local <strong>Community of Practice<\/strong> where anyone can share their experiences, and develop their confidence alongside their peers.<\/p>\n<p>It was at this point\u00a0we\u00a0decided to delve into the pedagogy,\u00a0identifying that routinely getting <strong>likeminded people<\/strong> together to share their knowledge (Wenger, McDermott and Snyder, 2002) could reap benefits in terms of developing communication skills and even a bank of useful resources (Bing-You and Varaklis, 2016). We also discovered that Communities of Practice tend to function well when they\u2019re left to simmer on their own \u2013 to<strong> grow organically<\/strong> as \u2018a process rather than an entity that can simply be set up\u2019 (Pyrko, Dorfler and Eden, 2017: 390). For this reason, we\u2019ve held back on some of our usual marketing, trusting\u00a0instead in growth generated through the community\u2019s own outreach.<\/p>\n<p>We are proud to be creating UniSpeaks at Edge Hill and look forward to welcoming more students to be part of this innovative new venture.
