This session aimed to navigate staff through the features of Microsoft Word that will successfully enable them to create a professional document that is clearly organised, structured and accessible. Page numbering can also make many people apprehensive, especially when you need the first few pages to be in Roman numerals and the rest of your document in Arabic numbers. Again, this session aimed to guide staff through this process, with lots of opportunities to practice and ask questions.<\/p>\n<h1><strong>The session<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p>This type of session lasts 60 minutes and enables staff to cover many areas of Microsoft Word and put their new knowledge into practice.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of the session staff should be able to do the following in Microsoft Word:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Use styles to apply headings to a document<\/li>\n<li>Create a table of contents for a document<\/li>\n<li>Add captions and create a table of figures<\/li>\n<li>Use section breaks and apply section formatting<\/li>\n<li>Add custom headers and footers<\/li>\n<li>Work collaboratively on a document<\/li>\n<li>Work with master documents and subdocuments<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The session took place in Oak room, Catalyst and provided staff with the opportunity to use computers to have a go themselves at formatting long documents. Modelling examples on the board, staff could\u00a0then\u00a0follow steps to format several long documents.<\/p>\n<h1>Personal Reflection Activity<\/h1>\n<p>At the start of the session I asked staff to write down on a post-it note how they currently felt about formatting long documents.<\/p>\n<h1><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-9824 size-medium aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.edgehill.ac.uk\/ls\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2019\/03\/1-300x300.png\" alt=\"How do you feel before the session?\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.edgehill.ac.uk\/ls\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2019\/03\/1-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.edgehill.ac.uk\/ls\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2019\/03\/1-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/blogs.edgehill.ac.uk\/ls\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2019\/03\/1-768x768.png 768w, https:\/\/blogs.edgehill.ac.uk\/ls\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2019\/03\/1-1024x1024.png 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.edgehill.ac.uk\/ls\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2019\/03\/1.png 1080w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/h1>\n<p>Staff responded with a variety of feelings towards the prospect of formatting long documents, with many using this session as an opportunity to develop their skills and refresh their current knowledge.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edgehill.ac.uk\/ls\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2019\/03\/2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-9825 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.edgehill.ac.uk\/ls\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2019\/03\/2-300x300.png\" alt=\"How do you feel after the session?\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.edgehill.ac.uk\/ls\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2019\/03\/2-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.edgehill.ac.uk\/ls\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2019\/03\/2-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/blogs.edgehill.ac.uk\/ls\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2019\/03\/2-768x768.png 768w, https:\/\/blogs.edgehill.ac.uk\/ls\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2019\/03\/2-1024x1024.png 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.edgehill.ac.uk\/ls\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2019\/03\/2.png 1080w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After the session I asked staff to complete the same activity, instead now writing down how they feel after the session about the prospect of formatting long documents. The responses were dramatically different, with many staff feeling more confident, happier and sorted!<\/p>\n<p>Members of staff said:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A very clear and informative delivery while maintaining a friendly approachable setting.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was brill and really informative!
