Growing numbers of university libraries across the UK have been reflecting on how they can develop their spaces and services in ways that embrace and promote equity, diversity and inclusion. In this context, many have been looking more closely at the materials in their library collections, leading to the realisation that these materials may not be as diverse as they could, and should, be. To this end Library and Learning Services has initiated a project to start exploring these issues and how we might enhance the diversity of our library collections. And we\u2019d love for you to help us!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What do we mean by collection diversification?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Whilst difficult to define, we envision \u2018diversity\u2019 to mean the inclusion of all voices and experiences, but particularly those who are or who have been marginalised in society, culture, and academia (among other contexts). In the context of the library collection, it means making sure that all types of voices and experiences are reflected in the books, journals and other resources we make available to you for your study and research.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Attending to diverse voices not only increases the ability to think critically, but also and most crucially provides a welcome space for those voices to be heard. This is not a project of replacement, but rather one of enhancement. <\/strong>Moreover, it is not a tokenistic attempt to repair centuries of oversight and oppression; instead, it is a socially minded and evidence-based practise of honouring and hearing from you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How can you contribute to this project?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Library Collection Diversification Project Group is comprised of academic and professional support staff with a passion for equity, diversity, and inclusion and we are committed to building library collections that are inclusive and reflective of the University\u2019s diverse communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, we are conscious that this is not something done to<\/em> or for<\/em> you, but with<\/em> you. Your voices and experiences, as students here at Edge Hill, are invaluable and important, and we want to make sure you feel represented in your reading lists and, more widely, in your library collections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With this in mind, we would greatly appreciate it if you could take a moment to complete our very short survey on this issue:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
