If you visit any UK town you may notice dropped kerbs and ramps outside public buildings enabling access for people using a wheelchair. There may be larger QR codes or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rnib.org.uk\/living-with-sight-loss\/assistive-aids-and-technology\/everyday-tech\/navigation-and-communication\/navilens\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NaviLens codes<\/a> that allow blind and partially sighted people to hear signs and information read out aloud. Maybe you\u2019ve noticed when Catalyst fire alarms are tested there are flashing lights, in addition to the siren, so deaf users are also alerted.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are lots of accessibility features and systems in place to support users every day, so it\u2019s important for accessibility to also feature in tools and resources you use in your studies!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What accessibility features do eResources have?<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When talking about <strong>eResources Accessibility<\/strong> we mean features that allow all users to access resources, and there are lots of features to assist everyone:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Text to speech <\/strong>is software which will read digital text back to you. Some eResource providers, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/edgehill.idm.oclc.org\/login?url=http:\/\/search.ebscohost.com\/login.asp?authtype=ip,uid&amp;profile=ehost&amp;defaultdb=ehh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">EBSCO<\/a>, have this feature built in. Alternatively, you can use the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-gb\/edge\/features\/read-aloud?form=MT00D8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Read Aloud feature of Microsoft Edge<\/a> or external software, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.readspeaker.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ReadSpeaker<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.naturalreaders.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Natural Reader<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Screen reader software <\/strong>is designed for people with a visual impairment, so has additional features which Text to Speech software doesn\u2019t have. Most of the eResources that we have are compatible with the most common screen reader software, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sightandsound.co.uk\/product\/jaws-home\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jaws<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nvaccess.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NVDA<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Controls to change the colour of the screen. <\/strong>Some eResource platforms have a built-in facility to change the colour of the screen or text, including <a href=\"https:\/\/bibliu.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">BibliU<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/edgehill.idm.oclc.org\/login?url=http:\/\/search.ebscohost.com\/login.asp?authtype=ip,uid&amp;profile=ehost&amp;defaultdb=ehh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">EBSCO<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/edgehill.idm.oclc.org\/login?url=http:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wiley<\/a>. Many other platforms are compatible with browser extensions, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/midnight-lizard.org\/home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Midnight Lizard<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Built in magnification. <\/strong>The vast majority of eResources have a built-in magnification feature that allow you to make the font larger or smaller to allow for different visual needs.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Keyboard only navigation. <\/strong>Most eResources also allow you to navigate using the keyboard only, a feature which is useful for anyone who finds it difficult to use a trackpad or a mouse. This usually involves using the spacebar and the enter, tab and arrow keys.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Alternative Text (Alt Text) <\/strong>is added to significant images in journal articles and eBooks. This is a description of the image and is useful for visually impaired readers, as the alt text can be read by a screen reader.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Changing the font. <\/strong>Some eResources, particularly eBook providers such as <a href=\"https:\/\/edgehill.idm.oclc.org\/login?url=https:\/\/ebookcentral.proquest.com\/lib\/edgehill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ebook Central<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/search.ebscohost.com\/login.aspx?direct=true&amp;scope=site&amp;db=e001mww\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">EBSCO eBooks<\/a>, allow you to change the font. This can be useful for Dyslexic users.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Transcripts for video content<\/strong> will transcribe the visual content and will make this available in an alternative format. Each entry on this list provides two helpful links for each resource: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>One link to the eResource homepage<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>One link to the accessibility statement from the provider<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The list also highlights key accessibility features for each resource, making it easier to find what suits your needs. Accessibility statements explain how you can access different formats, adjust font sizes and colours, and check screen reader compatibility.
