Does the thought of studying again fill you with trepidation as well as excitement? Are you anxious that you won\u2019t be able to \u2018keep up\u2019 with other students?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You are not alone! Students who are returning to study after time away sometimes feel that their academic skills are \u2018rusty\u2019, and worry about whether they will be able to remember how to undertake academic study, or write assignments. However, <strong>research shows that students who return to study after a break from education are often found to be more motivated, self-determined, focussed, and hard-working<\/strong> (Hunter-Johnson, 2017; Kasworm, 2018). Our experience has also shown that given the right encouragement and access to support, <strong>all students have the potential to achieve<\/strong>, regardless of their age or stage in life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edgehill.ac.uk\/ls\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2023\/09\/LS1121-Returning-to-Learning-social-media-Twitter-003-1-scaled.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.edgehill.ac.uk\/ls\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2023\/09\/LS1121-Returning-to-Learning-social-media-Twitter-003-1-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"Returning to Learning. The most recently available <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hesa.ac.uk\/data-and-analysis\/students\/table-3\">statistics<\/a> show that in the 2022\/2023 academic year:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>More than a third (35.6%) of our students were <strong>over 25<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>More than a quarter (25.9%) were <strong>over 30<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Recent research has also suggested that globally it is the over-50 age group that is the fastest growing demographic of adult learners (Heretick and Tanguma, 2020). While higher education does not have an upper age limit, the chances are that there will be several people on your course who are returning to education after a significant break.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<em><strong>Returning to Learning<\/strong> <\/em>workshop has been developed to offer a&nbsp;<strong>safe space<\/strong>&nbsp;for students re-entering education at Edge Hill to&nbsp;<strong>reconnect with learning<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>share their experiences<\/strong>&nbsp;with others in the same boat. We also welcome anyone who has previously been in the same position, and can offer&nbsp;<strong>peer support<\/strong>&nbsp;or tips for ways to ease back into an educational setting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Returning to Learning Ethos<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p><em>Our aim is to create a community of positive support to help develop the confidence of returning students, enabling them to believe that they can achieve, and be academically successful.&nbsp;<\/em><br><em>To ensure that we can offer our students the best experience, we&nbsp;draw upon research, our experience and academic skills knowledge, as well as students\u2019 own ideas about what they need, to best support their transition back into education.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to join Returning to Learning<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Returning to Learning<\/em> runs on alternate Wednesdays throughout each term, in <strong>Willow Room, Catalyst<\/strong>. Drop-in any time between 1-3pm for a cuppa and a chat (free tea, coffee and biscuits are provided!). Check out the <em>Returning to Learning<\/em> section on our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edgehill.ac.uk\/departments\/support\/ls\/uni-skills\/uniskills-workshops\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">UniSkills workshops<\/a> page for this term\u2019s dates. You can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edgehill.ac.uk\/departments\/support\/ls\/uni-skills\/uniskills-workshops\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">book your place online<\/a> or simply drop-in on the day!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whether you are totally new to university, are in your final year, or are returning to postgraduate study, why not come along and share your experiences. Each session is facilitated by both an <strong>Academic Skills Advisor<\/strong> and a <strong>Student Advisor<\/strong>, and will offer you the opportunity to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Meet other&nbsp;<em>Returning to Learning<\/em>&nbsp;students<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Share any concerns about returning to academic study at university<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Learn how others in this situation have adapted to Higher Education<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Suggest tips for effective learning<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Develop your academic resilience<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>We are always happy to answer questions, share our knowledge about studying at Edge Hill University, or just have a chat!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Are you returning to education after a break?
