Today we are looking at <a href=\"http:\/\/scholar.google.co.uk\">Google Scholar<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What is Google Scholar and what does it contain?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"http:\/\/scholar.google.co.uk\">Google Scholar<\/a> is Google\u2019s search engine which focuses on finding academic literature. It will help you find academic journal articles, textbooks, theses, pre-prints, patents and technical reports. It may contain links to content from academic publishers, professional organisations and universities\u2019 research archives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What are the benefits of using Google Scholar?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"http:\/\/scholar.google.co.uk\">Google Scholar<\/a> offers a number of benefits, which make it a useful tool for finding academic literature:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>When you complete a search, at the end of each result you will see a <strong>Cited by<\/strong> link with a number. This link gives you a list of other sources that have used the same source and may be of interest to your own research.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You will also see a <strong>Related articles<\/strong> link, which gives you a list of books, articles and other materials related to the one you\u2019ve started with. Some of these may be useful, although it isn\u2019t <em>exactly<\/em> known how the related items are chosen.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you have a <strong>Google account<\/strong>, you can sign in and <strong>save citations<\/strong> using the <strong>Save<\/strong> link. And you can retrieve those citations by clicking on <strong>My Library<\/strong>, which is on the top right-hand side of the page.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you use <strong>bibliographic management software<\/strong>, such as RefWorks or EndNote, you can also set up a link to <strong>export citations<\/strong> from <a href=\"http:\/\/scholar.google.co.uk\">Google Scholar<\/a> direct into these tools. It&#8217;s very easy to set up in your <strong>Settings<\/strong>, under <strong>Bibliography manager<\/strong> options, and then simply export to your tool of choice by clicking on <strong>Cite<\/strong> under your results. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There is a <strong>browser extension<\/strong> (or <strong>Button <\/strong>as Google calls it!) for all the main web browsers which connects to <a href=\"http:\/\/scholar.google.co.uk\">Google Scholar<\/a> from any webpage. You can use this to search for a particular article or book, or search for sources using keywords. If you need any help setting this up, <a href=\"https:\/\/scholar.googleblog.com\/2020\/09\/scholar-button-browser-extension-update.html\">Google have written a useful blog<\/a>!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You even can <strong>set up a link to provide access to the journal articles that we subscribe to<\/strong> \u2013 we\u2019ve created this <a href=\"https:\/\/edgehill.cloud.panopto.eu\/Panopto\/Pages\/Viewer.aspx?id=7a8710b4-8973-4342-9968-b0290096e92a\">short video guide<\/a> if you need any help setting this up.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What are the limits of using Google Scholar?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s important to realise that, as well as having benefits, <a href=\"http:\/\/scholar.google.co.uk\">Google Scholar<\/a> also has its limitations. These include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <strong>filtering system is undeveloped<\/strong>. You can choose a date range, but you can\u2019t choose a particular type of material (e.g., journal articles) or an academic subject. This means that the number of results is always high, but the relevancy drops off after a while.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <strong>Full Text @ Edge Hill<\/strong> link only works with journal articles and not books or other types of material. If you find a book you will need to copy and paste the title into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edgehill.ac.uk\/departments\/support\/ls\/discover-more\/\">Discover More<\/a> to check if we have it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We don\u2019t know which databases are included in a search. <a href=\"https:\/\/scholar.google.co.uk\/\">Google Scholar<\/a> <a>may be a useful tool for finding academic sources, but you shouldn\u2019t forget other search tools, such as <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.edgehill.ac.uk\/departments\/support\/ls\/discover-more\/\">Discover More<\/a>, which the University pays for to give you access to high quality, academic sources.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How do I access Google Scholar?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can go to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.co.uk\">Google<\/a> and search for <strong>Google Scholar<\/strong> or type the URL <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scholar.google.co.uk\">scholar.google.co.uk<\/a> direct into your web browser.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Further Help and Support<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is a <a href=\"https:\/\/scholar.google.co.uk\/intl\/en\/scholar\/help.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Google Scholar help page<\/a>, which you can access by clicking on <strong>Help<\/strong> in the bottom right-hand corner of the <a href=\"http:\/\/scholar.google.co.uk\">Google Scholar<\/a> homepage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And, as always, if you need any further help or support finding, accessing, or getting the most out of your resources head over the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edgehill.ac.uk\/departments\/support\/ls\/uni-skills\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">UniSkills web pages<\/a>.
