Our training workshops are for all researchers including staff at different career stages and PGRs. They are included in the University\u2019s Researcher Development Programme<\/a><\/strong>. All sessions take place online on Zoom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Topics include: publishing your work, open research, using Pure, RefWorks and EndNote, and writing a strong data management plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Demystifying open access: sharing your research outputs in Pure<\/span><\/strong>
Wednesday 26 October 2-3pm<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Introduces the Pure research information repository and guides you through the process of depositing your research there. We advise on open access and complying with requirements such as funder requirements and the REF open access policy.

Literature search for research<\/strong>
<\/span>Wednesday 2 November, 12-1pm<\/span>
repeated: Wednesday 22 February, 2-3pm<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Focusing on the Scopus database but also considering new search tools, this session demonstrates how citation databases can enable comprehensive, systematic searching of the literature and provide new insights for research. You will be able to apply a search strategy, gain insights from citation analysis, used advanced tools and translate these techniques to other platforms.

Doing your data management plan<\/span><\/strong>
Wednesday 9 November 2-3pm

All research projects at Edge Hill require a Data Management Plan (DMP). A good DMP outlines how data will be looked after during and after the research project, and ensures key considerations are addressed before the project begins. However, writing one isn\u2019t always easy. Here we consider some of the questions typically asked by a DMP, and use DMP Online to answer them accurately and concisely.

Learn how to use software to manage your reading and automatically generate citations and references. This session focuses on RefWorks, but can be applied to other tools like EndNote or Zotero. It covers how to import sources, manage your library and use the Microsoft Word plugin to quickly insert citations, adding them to your bibliography as you go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Open research embraces transparency and openness across the research cycle through making outputs, resources, and your evidence base (or \u2018data\u2019) freely available online. This session explains how to put these principles into practice and potentially increase the usage and value of your research.

Familiarity with open book publishing is growing. This is a brief introduction to the tools that can support an author in finding and selecting a publisher based on the ‘OA Books Toolkit<\/a>‘. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Using Statista, we’ll explore some of the market intelligence data that’s available from sources such as World Bank, YouGov and Kantar, alongside original research.

Copyright and your thesis<\/span><\/strong>

Best practice for considering copyright and your doctoral thesis. Identifying any copyright material you are using early will make things easier for you! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Getting published in journals<\/span><\/strong>
Wednesday 29 March 2-3pm<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Here we consider the steps required to get an article published. We cover the whole publishing process in the current landscape including selecting a publication, submission, peer review, open access, Pure and the REF.

Using the right metrics<\/span><\/strong>
Wednesday 5 April 2-3pm<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Which journal do I publish in? How can I demonstrate my research impact? How to support my promotion\/funding bid?
Metrics can help us with these questions to an extent, but often don\u2019t tell the full story and can be mis-applied. The session explains and demonstrates good practice in the use of bibliometric indicators.

If you need some focused writing time, we also have sessions for researchers which provide the perfect environment for you to get that chapter or paper written. Join us at the next Research Writing Group<\/a> in Catalyst or online on Monday 6 March. No need to register, just drop in!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
