But with a bit of planning we can all still study productively and happily ?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hi,\nI\u2019m Claire, an Academic Skills Advisor in the Student Engagement Team. My role\nis to support students to develop their academic writing skills, but up until\nrecently I was also a student at EHU \u2013 having just completed my PGCTHE over the\nsummer. Between March-July of this year, I (like many of you) juggled work and\nhome schooling alongside completing my final assignments. I learnt a lot during\nthis time and can empathise fully with those of you who have been balancing so\nmuch these past few months \u2013 and may be continuing to do so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With\nthis in mind, I thought I\u2019d share some of my top study tips..<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Study Space<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Try\nand find somewhere comfortable to study. Whilst we might not all be lucky\nenough to have the space (or funds) to kit out a spare room as an office, there\nare ways you can make sure that your studying life doesn\u2019t overtake your\npersonal life. I happily spent time in both my living room and bedroom writing assignments;\npropped up against pillows and blankets with notes all around me will always be\nmy most comfortable place to study! That said however, I made a conscious\neffort to tidy away the laptop, notes, articles and books each time I finished\nfor the day. Out of sight, out of mind, is a positive here; as you want to be\nable to switch off when you are not in studying mode. I found a cheap\ncollapsible storage box helped with this. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"377\" height=\"340\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.edgehill.ac.uk\/ls\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2020\/10\/book-box.png\" alt=\"Box, Storage, File, Carton, Office\" class=\"wp-image-13384\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.edgehill.ac.uk\/ls\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2020\/10\/book-box.png 377w, https:\/\/blogs.edgehill.ac.uk\/ls\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2020\/10\/book-box-300x271.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.edgehill.ac.uk\/ls\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2020\/10\/book-box-333x300.png 333w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 377px) 100vw, 377px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I\u2019d\nfill it with all my \u2018stuff\u2019 once I had finished and then put the lid on it! So,\nif you haven\u2019t got a permanent space to study, think about how you can adapt a\ntemporary or flexible space to work in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Caring Responsibilities<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Studying\nwith children around can be hard. As a single mum of a very lively seven-year-old,\nI know only too well that juggling studying alongside being a parent is not\neasy, particularly if you are unable to rely on your usual family\/friends to help\nwith childcare. For me, during lockdown, I often had to rely on TV and YouTube\nKids to help keep my daughter entertained \u2013 I now know more YouTubers than I\never did pre-COVID! Whilst parent-guilt can be difficult to deal with when you\u2019re\njuggling everything &#8211; remember it\u2019s never a long-term situation and workloads\nwill vary at different points in the semester. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"528\" height=\"340\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.edgehill.ac.uk\/ls\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2020\/10\/juggling.jpg\" alt=\"Juggler, Trick, Magician, Magic, Juggle\" class=\"wp-image-13387\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.edgehill.ac.uk\/ls\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2020\/10\/juggling.jpg 528w, https:\/\/blogs.edgehill.ac.uk\/ls\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2020\/10\/juggling-300x193.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.edgehill.ac.uk\/ls\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2020\/10\/juggling-466x300.jpg 466w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whilst working to a deadline, I worried at times that my own stress and anxiety was visible to my little girl. However, I was also showing her the importance of not giving up \u2013 even when things were proving difficult. Resilience is something we can all develop and rely on to help overcome obstacles and setbacks. My colleagues and I have put together an <a href=\"http:\/\/eshare.edgehill.ac.uk\/15639\/5\/story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Academic Resilience toolkit<\/a>, which you might find useful if you would like to develop these skills further. You may also want to check out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fika.community\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Fika<\/a>, an app which can help support good wellbeing and study habits. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Remember, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edgehill.ac.uk\/ls\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Library &amp; Learning Services<\/a> are here to support you with your study skills but do reach out to a tutor or Student Services if you are struggling to balance your commitments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Time Management<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With\nso much studying taking place now online, the onus is on you more than ever to\nbe organised and keep to deadlines. If you don\u2019t already, try using your phone calendar\nto keep track of where you need to be and when. I\u2019d be lost without Google\ncalendar and the ability to colour code all my different activities across the\nweek. Remember to also take regular breaks from studying, we all need down time and the opportunity to relax ?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Motivational Support<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whilst\nstudying online, I found staying in touch with friends from my course helpful\nas we could support and motivate each other.
