Once you\u2019ve finished your assignment, closed those 300 tabs you\u2019ve had open for days and tidied up the remains of endless coffees and snacks, all you want to do is to upload your work to Turnitin and never see it again. But\u2026 you\u2019re not quite finished. There are things to do BEFORE submitting your assignment. Luckily, I\u2019ve put together some tips and tricks for submitting assignments. Trust me, as a fourth year, these are handy!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Tips<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Check to see\nif your references are complete<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Depending on what subject you study depends on what referencing style you use. Each referencing style will have their own sets of rules and if used incorrectly, it could lose you a few marks! Make sure you are checking over your references by using a referencing guide \u2013 these are available from your My Library<\/em> tab on Learning Edge. (If you\u2019re struggling with your referencing, you can even book a peer to peer appointment<\/a> with one of us Student Advisors!)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Use Microsoft\nWord\u2019s \u201cRead Aloud\u201d feature<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Microsoft Word has a brilliant feature that will read your assignment aloud, helping you to hear where you might\u2019ve made a mistake, or where a sentence is not as clear as you wanted it to be. Make use of this tool! To launch the Read Aloud feature go to Review and locate the Read Aloud feature. Take a look at the Assistive Technology pages for more great support<\/a>.
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Highlight\nwhere you have answered the questions \/ met the learning outcomes<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\ncan be easy, especially in essays, to go off topic and start writing about\ncontent that doesn\u2019t answer your topic question. Go through and highlight\nplaces where you have answered your assignment title or question and try to\nthink of areas where things could be tightened or strengthened. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Textbook<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Check for\nincorrect spelling and grammar<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thankfully,\nMicrosoft Word often does this for you without you having to lift a finger.\nHowever, if you\u2019re like me, you might make spelling or grammatical mistakes\nthat Word might not pick up. For example, I often use words that are not in the\nright place, or use an alternative correct spelling (e.g. there, their,\nthey\u2019re). Also, make sure that you are avoiding contractions (can\u2019t, shouldn\u2019t,\nwon\u2019t) and idioms (e.g. at the end of the day). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Check that\nthe format is correct<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Does\nyour assignment follow the formatting rules for your course? Usually, courses\nwill outline preferences for the format of assignments, so they look\nprofessional. For example, they might specify a font style, font size, spacing\netc. Check with your module handbook or tutor if you are not sure. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Take a break<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

If\nyou have time, leave your assignment for a few days to allow yourself to come\nback to it with a clear mind. Looking over your assignments with fresh eyes\nwill help you notice where you have made mistakes, or where you think your\nassignment might need more work. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Look at\nprevious feedback from tutors<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Feedback\nfrom previous assignments is your best way of achieving a better mark. Looking\nback over you tutor\u2019s comments and acting upon them will show that you have\ndeveloped and improved since your last assignment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Check your\noriginality report<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Turnitin\nwill provide you with an originality report that will let you know what\npercentage of your assignment is matching other materials. The originality\nreport shouldn\u2019t be used as a proofreading tool. However, you might want to\nhave a look through to see if you have referenced all of your quotes and ideas\ncorrectly. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

DO NOT LEAVE\nUNTIL THE LAST MINUTE<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Take\nthis advice from an MA student… submitting your assignment at the last minute\ncan go awful if Turnitin goes down or is under scheduled maintenance. Make sure\nyou submit your assignment a few days before the deadline to ensure an easy and\nsmooth submission. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

So\u2026\nthat\u2019s a wrap on my tips. Of course, there are many more things you could do\nbefore submitting your assignment, but these are the tips I\u2019ve found the most\nimportant. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
