Additional icons such as hands together and figures in a circle. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">The Development of the Parents and Carers of Neurodivergent\/SEND\u00a0Children Staff Network.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\">The Purpose Behind Forming the\u00a0Parents and Carers of Neurodivergent\/SEND\u00a0Children Staff Network.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Following a recent staff awareness session at\u00a0the annual Neurodiversity event <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edgehill.ac.uk\/ls\/2025\/10\/02\/embrace-support-empower-2025-2026\/\">Embrace, Support Empower<\/a>, several colleagues\u00a0approached\u00a0Anna to\u00a0express their\u00a0need\u00a0for\u00a0tailored support\u00a0in navigating\u00a0SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) pathways\u00a0while also managing their responsibilities at home .\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In direct response to this insight, we have&nbsp;established&nbsp;a new network that is designed to meet the specific needs of our staff community. This network is built on the valuable lived experiences of our colleagues and will continually evolve based on their input, ensuring it&nbsp;remains&nbsp;relevant and impactful.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<a class=\"wp-block-read-more\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edgehill.ac.uk\/ls\/2026\/03\/13\/the-development-of-the-parents-and-carers-of-neurodivergent-send-children-staff-network\/\" target=\"_self\">Read more<span class=\"screen-reader-text\">: A New Staff Network &#8211; Parents and Carers of Neurodivergent\/SEND\u00a0Children.<\/span><\/a>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\">How This Network Will Support You<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The group\u2019s&nbsp;initial&nbsp;aim is to simply bring colleagues together for relaxed, supportive conversations. We know that none of us have every answer\u2014but what we&nbsp;<em>can<\/em>&nbsp;offer is a safe space, a listening ear, and a mix of lived and professional experience that can make a real difference.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the group grows,&nbsp;we\u2019ll&nbsp;shape its purpose and terms of reference together. I have contributed extensively to the ITE Secondary Physical Education PGCE with QTS programme and as the Faculty of Education\u2019s Senior Safeguarding Lead along with&nbsp;4 year&nbsp;service as a school governor. As part of his Teaching and Learning Fellowship at Edge Hill, I have focused on improving support for neurodivergent students, promoting a proactive,&nbsp;equitable, and research\u2011informed culture across the institution. My latest research also explores how neurodiverse trainees and mentors can implement meaningful adjustments aligned within Early Career Teachers. I&nbsp;recognise&nbsp;that these responsibilities can be both emotionally and logistically challenging, especially alongside work commitments. The group aims to create a supportive and understanding environment where staff feel comfortable sharing their experiences without fear of judgment. I want to ensure that colleagues feel valued, supported, and better equipped to manage these journeys both personally and professionally.&nbsp;<\/em>Aisling Barker&nbsp;\u2013&nbsp;External Charters Manager&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\">What are the factors surrounding&nbsp;children&nbsp;requiring&nbsp;assessments and support?&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Colleagues have shared that they have&nbsp;encountered&nbsp;unhelpful and, at times, offensive comments&nbsp;regarding&nbsp;the perceived increase in neurodivergence. These conversations have included remarks such as \u201ceveryone thinks they\u2019re neurodivergent\u201d and \u201ceveryone is a bit autistic.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The information below outlines several factors that have contributed to more people&nbsp;seeking&nbsp;and receiving neurodivergent diagnoses.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><tbody><tr><td><strong>Greater Awareness Among Parents, Teachers, and Health Professionals<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/td><td>Improved diagnostic tools.&nbsp;<br>Awareness campaigns and advocacy.&nbsp;<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>Diagnostic Criteria Have Expanded and Evolved<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/td><td>Conditions previously understood only in their most severe forms are now assessed across a wider spectrum of presentations.&nbsp;<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>Reduced Stigma and Increased Acceptance<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/td><td>Changes in language and awareness have led to a social model viewing neurodivergence as a natural variation rather than a deficit.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>Better Identification of Groups Historically Missed<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/td><td>More awareness of&nbsp;\u2018masking\u2019 particularly in&nbsp;girls.&nbsp;&nbsp;<br>&nbsp;<br>Disparities are decreasing as minority groups gain more access to services&nbsp;<br>&nbsp;<br>Improved training for meetings,&nbsp;challenging decisions&nbsp;and&nbsp;seeking second opinions&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/td><td><strong>Frustration<\/strong>&nbsp;<br>Delays, barriers, and feeling like they must constantly advocate.&nbsp;<strong><\/strong>&nbsp;<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>Hope<\/strong>&nbsp;<br>Alongside the stress, there is often hope&nbsp;for better&nbsp;understanding hope&nbsp;for tailored support&nbsp;and&nbsp;hope that their child will thrive with the right help.&nbsp;Assessment can feel like the gateway to a more positive and informed future.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/td><td><strong>Guilt or Self\u2011Doubt<\/strong>&nbsp;<br>Wondering if they missed signs or could have acted sooner.&nbsp;<strong><\/strong>&nbsp;<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\">A Closing Reflection&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The creation of the Parents and Carers of Neurodivergent\/SEND Children Staff Network marks&nbsp;an important step&nbsp;in ensuring that colleagues who are supporting children through neurodivergent or SEND pathways feel recognised, understood, and less alone. The experiences shared by staff underline just how complex, emotional, and often overwhelming these journeys can be\u2014yet they also highlight the strength, determination, and hope that so many parents and carers carry with them.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By bringing people together in an open, non\u2011judgemental space, the network aims to foster connection, compassion, and practical support grounded in both lived experience and professional insight. As the group grows, its direction will be shaped collaboratively, ensuring that it&nbsp;remains&nbsp;responsive, meaningful, and truly reflective of the community it&nbsp;represents.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ultimately, this&nbsp;network is about more than sharing challenges\u2014it is about building confidence, reducing isolation, and empowering colleagues to navigate SEND and neurodivergent pathways with greater clarity and support.
