Award Winning Leadership in Mobile Teaching and Learning!

Learning Services have been awarded a Mobile Innovation Award as part of the 2013 Blackboard Catalyst Award programme. This exciting achievement recognises the impressive growth of mobile enhanced provision and practice at Edge Hill University and specifically, Learning Services’ strategic approach to supporting all staff and students to embrace the educational affordances of mobile technology.

BB_Catalyst_AwardIn September 2011, evidence of increasing mobile device ownership and student feedback about the potential of mobile technology led the university to invest in the Blackboard Mobile Learn app and our journey to mobility began! Following installation, set-up and testing, a strong communication and marketing campaign was initiated to promote and encourage uptake. Resource guides and support events like the technology roadshow mobile clinics were provided to help students and staff get started downloading apps, connecting to the campus wifi and using the vast range of mobile compatible library resources, such as the Library Catalogue app, Discover more and Ebrary eBooks. Concurrently a comprehensive staff development programme, which included innovative workshops like ‘A Mobile Field Trip’ & ‘Help My Mobile Is Smarter Than Me’, began, in order to support the effective adaptation and development of new mobile friendly teaching and learning practices – with areas such as Postgraduate Clinical Education, HEA4065 Clinical Research, SENCo, Dyslexia, and Sports Therapy leading the way to design and develop course environments that work seamlessly with the Mobile Learn app and enable their students to engage and learn at a time and place that is convenient to them.

Over the last 18 months mobile usage has increased dramatically and pockets of mobile friendly practices are expanding to become the standard modus operandi, accordingly both the service and the university have continued to invest in a portfolio of mobile facilities and activities to develop staffing expertise in order to positively enhance the student experience.

The mobile landscape continues to shift and provide new opportunities to enhance education and we’re working to build on these strong foundations to explore and exploit these exciting  developments. (Augmented reality is next on our agenda so watch this space!) Ongoing evaluation through analytics, user feedback, research and benchmarking is helping to ensure we are in a position to respond to changing behaviours and continue to implement a progressive mobile strategy.

This Blackboard Catalyst Mobile Innovation Award celebrates the hard work and achievement of many colleagues and students across the university. The product of constructive relationships and collaboration makes innovation and transformative teaching and learning practices possible- so this award goes to everyone at Edge Hill who is involved, engaged and working together to embrace mobile learning!

The awards ceremony will take place amongst a global community of peers at the Blackboard World 2013 Education Technology Conference this July in Las Vegas. As Learning Technology Development Manager I have been lucky enough to be invited to represent Edge Hill and Learning Services to accept this prestigious Mobile Innovation Award.

A Hub of Activity!

Technology Roadshow & Mobile Clinic

On Thursday 31st of January, Learning Services and IT Services will be running an open event in the HUB showcasing everything you might need to know about the latest technology developments with Learning Edge, the campus wifi, mobile apps and electronic library resources.

With the ever growing range of services targeted at mobile users we will be on hand to help you get the most from your smartphones and tablet devices at the first #EHUmobileclinic! You might think you know all there is to know about your mobile device and how you can use it to help you with your studies, but as Rumsfeld says,

There are known knowns; there are things we know we know.
We also know there are known unknowns; that is to say, we know there are some things we do not know.
But there are also unknown unknowns – the ones we don’t know we don’t know.

So, come along to the HUB and talk to us about technology; let us demystify some of the things you’ve heard about but don’t know how to use, and let us help you get started using technologies you haven’t even thought of yet!

We’ll be talking about, Learning Edge, Campus Pack, Mobile Learn, the PC Availability Finder, Library Anywhere, Ebrary, Collaborate, and much, much more.

Learning Edge Maintenance: System Unavailable Overnight – 29th & 30th December

Advance Notice

Blackboard Managed Hosting will be carrying out essential maintenance in their AMS datacenter in the run up to the New Year and would like to set expectations for two overnight maintenance windows: one on December 29th and a second on December 30th (both between midnight and 8:00 a.m.) The Learning Edge system will be unavailable during this time.

We are advised that Blackboard engineers have successfully completed the same type of maintenance before in two other datacenters and hope to complete their work within the first maintenance window (29th December) but have reserved the second window (30th December) to ensure they can complete the maintenance without any unscheduled disruption.

Please note this work is in addition to the Learning Edge Upgrade which took place between 19th and 21st December.

Learning Edge Available: System Upgrade Complete

The Learning Edge system upgrade to Blackboard Learn Service Pack 7 has been completed ahead of schedule and the system is now available.

Blackboard Managed Hosting and ICM have worked with the Edge Hill University Learning Technology Development team to support this upgrade. We have conducted thorough system testing and are happy with the success of the upgrade but encourage you to email ltdsupport@edgehill.ac.uk if you notice any problems.

Learning Edge Upgrade: System Unavailable – 19th-21st December

Hopefully you will have already seen an advance notice about the scheduled upgrade to Learning Edge via your University email, on the Learning Edge login page, in an announcment or on the Learning Edge blog. Just in case you haven’t, here is another reminder to help you plan for the disruption.

The bad news is that Learning Edge (Blackboard 9.1) will be unavailable from 21:30 pm next Monday 19th December to 12:00 pm (midday) on Wednesday 21st December whilst the system is upgraded. Please add this to your diary.

The good news is this is an upgrade to the system which will introduce several fixes to minor bugs and glitches and provide you with a more stable, reliable and feature rich system.

Collaboration for Success

On Monday 28th March a new work-based MA Education Programme, from the Faculty of Education, was approved (with some conditions) at Institutional validation and notably received a commendation for the “teamwork and the holistic approach to the intelligent use of technology”. This is welcome recognition of the invaluable collaborations between Faculties and Learning Services which help assure an excellent student learning experience.

Thanks from the proposing team to Hannah and Meg for their contributions with regards to the VLE and other learning technologies are also extended to the wider Learning Services team who work with the Faculty to provide excellent information and media resources and learner support.
