Returning books to Library and Learning Services

We appreciate that many of you have items still on loan, and are anxious to know how you can return them to the library, especially if you are soon leaving the University.
For the time being Catalyst and Manchester remain closed and you are not able to return your books, either in person or in the post.

For those of you continuing with your studies
Keep hold of your items for now and, once the new term is underway, you will be able to return your items when you are next on Campus for teaching.

  • All the books you have on loan will automatically renew every 2 weeks.
  • Reservations have been temporarily suspended so all your books will auto renew throughout the summer.
  • You will not accrue fines during this period

Final Year Students
We will shortly contact you, via your university email, with further information on returning items and how to keep in touch with the university.

Learning Services Fresher’s Fair competition

During the Fresher’s Fair on Wednesday 20th September Learning Services are giving you the chance to win some prizes.

Option 1 – Guess the year!

We have delved into the University Library archive and selected 4 photographs of Edge Hill Libraries through the years – past, present, and future.  For the chance to win a £50 Amazon voucher all you need to do is guess the year you think each photo is from and the closest combined score will be the winner.

To enter:

  1. Come and find us at the Fresher’s Fair 2017
  2. Look at the photos displayed
  3. Write the year you think the photo is from on the entry form provided and place it in the submission box

We will also be posting the same images on Twitter so feel free to play along online – just for fun though, to enter the competition you will need to come and see us at the Fresher’s Fair.

Option 2 – Follow us on Twitter

The best way to keep up to date with all that Learning Services has to offer is by following us on Twitter. To encourage you to do so we are giving away a library goody bag to one lucky person who starts following us on the 20th September. To be entered into this prize draw just:

World Book Day Fun

To celebrate World Book Day we are bringing you a fantastic Golden Ticket competition in conjunction with Wally of Where’s Wally fame. #WBDGoldenTicket

In the run up to World Book Day on Thursday 2nd March we will be posting two images per day of Wally somewhere in the University Library with a book. In each of the books we will conceal a Golden Ticket, which can be exchanged for a fabulous literary chocolate prize at the Welcome Desk

How to enter…

From Monday 27th February to Thursday 2nd March, we will be posting 2 separate images per day, at randomly generated times, across all three of our social media platforms.

Use your skill and knowledge to search for the book on the library catalogue, obtain the class number to locate the item on the shelves, run to the shelf (making sure you don’t trip and hurt yourself 🙂 ) and claim the Golden Ticket.

Bring the Golden Ticket to the LS Chocolate Factory (i.e. the Welcome Desk on the ground floor) and we will exchange it for your super prize.

Terms & Conditions

  1. Only EHU Students and Staff are eligible to win the prize.
  2. Learning Services staff are not eligible to win a prize (that would be cheating!)
  3. There are 8 prizes. The prizes are non-transferable and have no cash value.

Self Service Surprise

Following on from our fabulous refurb, we present to you the next act in our makeover ….Self Service Laptops.


36 high spec, fully loaded, fully charged HP Laptops will be available 24-7 for loan from the University Library, via self-service lockers, all you need is your UniCard.

The Laptops will have installed:

  • Microsoft Office 365
  • SPSS v22
  • Read & Write v11
  • Inspiration v8

The unit will be installed in the coming weeks, so watch this space!

December graduation

Are you graduating this December? Don’t forget to sign up to the Alumni network and get 10 years membership of the University Library after you graduate!

Alumni Membership entitles you to:

  • Access the study facilities at any of our libraries (Ormskirk, Aintree, Manchester and Chorley) and borrow up to 5 books
  • Browse our book, print journal and newspaper collections
  • Use a number of educational and academic electronic resources as a day visitor under the terms of the walk in user licence
  • Staff assistance from help desks, use of guides and support documentation
  • Self-service photocopying and binding and laminating facilities
  • Access to these fantastic electronic resource packages which can be accessed off site.

Easter Vacation opening at Learning Services

We are pleased to announce that we are offering extra opening times over the holiday period. Our additional opening is

Easter Saturday: 11am – 3pm

Easter Monday & Tuesday:  9am – 5pm

These days are traditionally University closed days, but as we know this is a very busy time for students finishing assignments and projects, and preparing for exams, we are hoping students, and staff, can take full advantage of this.

If you are going home for Easter remember you can access other universities WiFi by selecting Eduroam as the wireless network, and logging in using your Edge Hill log in and password. If you are planning to use your Sconul Access at another institution over Easter, you would be advised to check their opening hours over the holiday.

Learning Services at Christmas

We are aware the January exam period is looming, as is the start of a busy time for those undertaking dissertations, so the next few weeks may be the only time you may have to get some extra work done.  Learning Services will be here for you if you need some quiet study time.

Our additional opening hours at Christmas are always well used and this year we are pleased be able to offer more vacation opening than ever before.

The University Library will be open for 3 days during the Christmas vacation.

As well as being open Monday 23rd December, 9am – 5pm, we are open Christmas Eve, 9am – 3pm, Monday 30th December, 9am – 5pm, and New Years Eve, 9am – 3pm. You can come in and see us, find resources, get some help, use a PC, bring your books back and take out some more! As the Library is now home to the media equipment, media students are also able to access kit during the Christmas vacation, for the first time.

Our online help tool – Ask Us – is available 24/7 throughout the Christmas period for you to check our bank of answers, get in touch via email or text and, during our opening hours, use live web chat to get the help you need. Our telephone helpline is available during opening hours on 01695 584286

24/7 access to PCs in the LINC building will operate throughout the holiday period if you need a PC.

Of course you don’t have to visit us in the library, you can use us online. All our eResources will be available via our website and library catalogue so why not give them a visit. You can access 24/7:

  • 97,000+ eBooks
  • 40,000+ eJournals
  • specialist subject web pages to sign post you to the right resources for your subject

Easter vacation opening.

Vacation opening hours are now underway at all our sites. Please check the website here for a full list of all opening hours.

Please note There will be no midnight opening at the University Library, until w-c Monday 8th April, when term time opening re-commences

Most Learning Services sites will be closed Good Friday – Easter Tuesday Inclusive, however Aintree LIRC will be open Tuesday 2nd April  8.30am – 8.00pm

Don’t forget Edge Hill now uses Eduroam, which enables students to continue to access  WiFi at other universities by simply selecting Eduroam as the wireless network and using your usual Edge Hill log in, similarly users from other institutions can access the wireless network via Eduroam when they visit us.

Already planning your Easter studies?

At this busy time of year and as Easter approaches, many of our users will be thinking about time to study in the University Library or any of our other centres.  Opening hours at our sites will alter slightly, week commencing Monday 25th March, and over the  Easter vacation.

University Library: Monday  25th March to Thursday 28th March: 8.00am – 9.00pm. Please note no midnight opening

LINC Building:  the help desk hours Monday 25th March to Thursday 28th March:8.45am – 7.00pm.

24/7 access to PCs in the LINC remains the same.  You will need  a valid UniCard

Aintree LIRC: Monday 25th March to Thursday 28th March: 8.30am – 7.30pm

Woodlands Library: Monday 25th March to Thursday 28th March: 9.00am – 7.00pm

Easter Weekend 29th March – 2nd April 2013

If you are going home for the vacation and would like access to a university library closer to home, are you aware of the SCONUL Access scheme? To join and for more information please go to the SCONUL Access website.  If you do want to visit another library or you are a visitor wishing to come to Edge Hill, please always ring and check arrangements first.
