{"id":8776,"date":"2021-02-23T11:25:17","date_gmt":"2021-02-23T11:25:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.edgehill.ac.uk\/learningedge\/?p=8776"},"modified":"2021-02-23T11:27:14","modified_gmt":"2021-02-23T11:27:14","slug":"build-accessible-student-use-of-alternative-formats","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.edgehill.ac.uk\/learningedge\/2021\/02\/23\/build-accessible-student-use-of-alternative-formats\/","title":{"rendered":"Build Accessible-Student Use of Alternative Formats"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In&nbsp;Jan 2019&nbsp;EHU acquired a new technology called Blackboard Ally to help improve the accessibility of content within Blackboard, in line with UK legislation.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ally&nbsp;not only&nbsp;provides staff with an accessibility score&nbsp;and guidance on files uploaded to Blackboard but also provides the files in&nbsp;alternative formats.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/help.blackboard.com\/Ally\/Ally_for_LMS\/Student\/Alternative_Formats\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Alternative formats\u202f<\/a>provide greater opportunities&nbsp;for everyone to access the information they need in the way they need or want it. With\u202falternative formats\u202fall\u202fstudents\u202fcan meet the same learning objectives using resources that are built to target the needs of the individual\u202fstudent.&nbsp; For example, students have converted lecture slides to audio,&nbsp;listening&nbsp;to&nbsp;them&nbsp;during their commute and to help them revise.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the past&nbsp;the advice was to upload your materials to Blackboard as PDF\u2019s to aid viewing on mobile devices. Since then,&nbsp;technology has moved on&nbsp;and&nbsp;advice has changed.&nbsp; It is easier&nbsp;and&nbsp;quicker to upload an accessible document in its original format,&nbsp;such as a Word document or PowerPoint. In its orginal format,&nbsp;students can then choose to download a version of the document that\u2019s right for their own learning style through Ally Alternative formats.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>We are often asked if students are using this feature? With an&nbsp;ePub&nbsp;you can take notes, adjust the text and background settings and create bookmarks.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Apple users can use\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.apple.com\/ca\/ibooks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">iBooks<\/a>\u202fto open&nbsp;ePub&nbsp;files, Android users can use\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=com.faultexception.reader&amp;hl=en_GB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Lithium<\/a>\u202for\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=com.hyperionics.avar&amp;hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Voice Aloud Reader<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ePub&nbsp;might be useful if:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>You want to read content on your tablet,&nbsp;eReader&nbsp;or phone.&nbsp;<\/li><li>You want to adjust font size and background&nbsp;colour.&nbsp;<\/li><li>You want to highlight content, take notes, and bookmark important pages.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>You want to be able to copy, paste, and search text.&nbsp;<\/li><li>You study on your commute and want to take your study materials with you<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-ugb-accordion ugb-accordion ugb-82eae00 ugb-accordion--v2 ugb-accordion--design-basic class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A Tagged PDF uses tags and elements\u2014such as paragraphs and headings to add meaning to a page.&nbsp;It aids screen reader users as it adds structure to documents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tagged PDF might be useful if:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>You want to be able to copy, paste, and search text.<\/li><li>You want to use text-to-speech and adjust the speed of the speech.<\/li><li>You use a screen reader.<\/li><\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ally alternative formats are automatically generated from the original source document and this is why it is so important (as well as&nbsp;a legal requirement) to make the content you upload
