{"id":6346,"date":"2018-05-14T08:57:34","date_gmt":"2018-05-14T07:57:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.edgehill.ac.uk\/learningedge\/?p=6346"},"modified":"2018-05-14T08:57:34","modified_gmt":"2018-05-14T07:57:34","slug":"marking-with-marky-mark-managing-the-marking-period-stress-free","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.edgehill.ac.uk\/learningedge\/2018\/05\/14\/marking-with-marky-mark-managing-the-marking-period-stress-free\/","title":{"rendered":"Marking with Marky Mark &#8211; Managing the marking period stress free"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-6373 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.edgehill.ac.uk\/learningedge\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/130\/2018\/04\/Mark.png\" alt=\"Mark avatar\" width=\"180\" height=\"180\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.edgehill.ac.uk\/learningedge\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/130\/2018\/04\/Mark.png 180w, https:\/\/blogs.edgehill.ac.uk\/learningedge\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/130\/2018\/04\/Mark-150x150.png 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 180px) 100vw, 180px\" \/>Yes, it&#8217;s that time of year again&#8230; Exams are in full flow, the academic year is beginning to come to a close (for students perhaps!) and that means one thing&#8230; marking!<\/p>\n<p>It can be a stressful time for tutors with the (virtual) mountains of papers requiring a critical eye cast over them, for this reason we have put together some hints, tips and reassurances to ease you through the period.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Downtime<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>We don\u2019t schedule any maintenance during the marking period so you should find the systems up 100% during the marking period.\u00a0 Any issues you experience are likely to be local &#8211; meaning that they should be able to be fixed by one of your friendly Learning Technologists (or one of their Learning Services or IT Services colleagues!)<\/p>\n<p>Exceptions are only made for urgent security updates \u2013 these will be done as quickly as possible and at &#8216;off-peak&#8217; times (3am in the morning anyone!?)<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Errors (when marking)<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-6358\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.edgehill.ac.uk\/learningedge\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/130\/2018\/04\/icomoon_e6640_128.png\" alt=\"warning cone icon\" width=\"128\" height=\"128\" \/><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>You may very occasionally experience problems when marking &#8211; usually via Turnitin.\u00a0 If this is the case, try the following before contacting Learning Technology.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Close the window<\/li>\n<li>Log out of Blackboard<\/li>\n<li>Clear your browser cache<\/li>\n<li>Try a different browser<\/li>\n<li>If possible try a different PC<\/li>\n<li>\n<h2>Try using a Windows machine wherever possible<\/h2>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Plan B<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>It&#8217;s important that you have a Plan B, just in case of the worst scenario! (When you have a Plan B you usually don&#8217;t need it but when you don&#8217;t&#8230; well!)<\/p>\n<p>What will you do if a student or students can\u2019t submit? This may be due to an issue their end or could be some other factor&#8230;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Will you offer paper submission?<\/li>\n<li>Will you offer an extension?<\/li>\n<li>Will you allow the to email it and then you submit on their behalf?<\/li>\n<li>What time are they due to submit? Is it during office hours so it can be dealt with?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Notifications<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-6364\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.edgehill.ac.uk\/learningedge\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/130\/2018\/04\/icomoon_e6050_128.png\" alt=\"notification icon\" width=\"128\" height=\"128\" \/><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>For your sanity and students&#8217; don&#8217;t forget to keep communicating!<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Do you make use of the Announcements feature in Blackboard?<\/li>\n<li>Do you have a communication plan? Is it via email? Word of mouth? a Twitter account? Do your students know what method you use?<\/li>\n<li>Do students have notifications switched on in the mobile app? They need to have allowed \u2018push\u2019 notifications\u2026 this can\u2019t be set for them!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><strong>Online Hints and Tips<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n<h2><strong>Turnitin App<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Do you have an <strong>iPad<\/strong>? You can download the papers to mark offline if so.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Convert Comments to QuickMarks and save them to your library for easy reuse.<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>For easy reuse in the assignment you&#8217;re grading or in other assignments, you can convert a &#8216;Bubble Comment&#8217; into a QuickMark. QuickMarks allow you to create your own library of feedback that might be applicable, on multiple occasions, to multiple students, across multiple classes and assignments.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Drag and Drop QuickMarks Anywhere on the Paper<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>You can access a library of feedback by selecting the QuickMark icon from the navigation bar. Use the search box to find a specific QuickMark. Once you&#8217;ve selected the QuickMark you&#8217;d like to add to the paper, drag it from the panel and drop it onto the relevant part of the paper.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Highlight Tool<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Use text highlight together with comments in order to clarify to students what comments refer to.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Taking a break&#8230;<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-6361 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.edgehill.ac.uk\/learningedge\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/130\/2018\/04\/icomoon_e66c0_128.png\" alt=\"coffee cup icon\" width=\"128\" height=\"128\" \/><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Please note that when using Turnitin, it will timeout after 1 hour of inactivity. &#8216;Inactivity&#8217; means not interacting with any part of the Turnitin interface, be aware though, scrolling up and down a student submission does not count as activity!
