{"id":4629,"date":"2015-11-24T08:00:36","date_gmt":"2015-11-24T08:00:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.edgehill.ac.uk\/learningedge\/?p=4629"},"modified":"2016-03-03T15:27:07","modified_gmt":"2016-03-03T15:27:07","slug":"rubrics-so-what-are-they-anyway","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.edgehill.ac.uk\/learningedge\/2015\/11\/24\/rubrics-so-what-are-they-anyway\/","title":{"rendered":"Rubrics&#8230; So what are they anyway?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Recently in the Learning Technology Department we&#8217;ve been taking lots of calls and emails from staff wanting to use Rubrics in their teaching and learning but specifically, marking.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What are they?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Rubrics could also be called Grading or Marking Criteria. \u00a0I&#8217;m sure many of you are used to the grid system used to mark students work using &#8216;Scales&#8217; (e.g. 1st, 2:1, 2nd etc&#8230; \/ Pass, Merit, Distinction etc&#8230;) and &#8216;Criteria&#8217; (e.g. Knowledge, Presentation, Understanding, Content etc&#8230;)<\/p>\n<p>If you translate your paper criterias into a rubric in Blackboard (or Turnitin) you can use them electronically to mark your students&#8217; work quickly and efficiently. \u00a0There are of course some limitations (for instance you can&#8217;t annotate a rubric as some would on a paper copy) but once you learn to work with them and create your own departmental methods, in time it should become much quicker and easier. \u00a0The best bit is that it&#8217;s all saved alongside the submitted work so that students can always refer to it and staff can always cross check their marks or conduct second marking easily.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.edgehill.ac.uk\/learningedge\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/130\/2015\/11\/Rubric.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-4651\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.edgehill.ac.uk\/learningedge\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/130\/2015\/11\/Rubric-1024x478.png\" alt=\"Rubric\" width=\"584\" height=\"273\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.edgehill.ac.uk\/learningedge\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/130\/2015\/11\/Rubric-1024x478.png 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.edgehill.ac.uk\/learningedge\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/130\/2015\/11\/Rubric-300x140.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.edgehill.ac.uk\/learningedge\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/130\/2015\/11\/Rubric-500x233.png 500w, https:\/\/blogs.edgehill.ac.uk\/learningedge\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/130\/2015\/11\/Rubric.png 1075w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Where do I set them up?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Rubrics are available in both <strong>Turnitin<\/strong> and with a number of <strong>Blackboard<\/strong> (Learning Edge) tools such as Blogs, Wikis, Discussion Forums and Assignments.<\/p>\n<p>However!
