Recently I brought along my Google Cardboard so that the team could try out some Virtual Reality experiences.<\/p>\n<p>There is a lot of interest in Virtual Reality at the moment with Facebook&#8217;s acquisition of <a title=\"Facebook closes its $2bn Oculus Rift acquisition. What next?\" href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2014\/jul\/22\/facebook-oculus-rift-acquisition-virtual-reality\" target=\"_blank\">Oculus VR<\/a> and the development of a wide range of headsets including those which use your phone as a screen and computer, and those which are standalone devices. Google Cardboard is one of those which holds a compatible phone, and is at the cheaper end of the scale as you can <a title=\"Want Cardboard? Here\u2019s how to make (or buy) Google\u2019s DIY VR headset at home\" href=\"http:\/\/www.pocket-lint.com\/news\/129612-want-cardboard-here-s-how-to-make-or-buy-google-s-diy-vr-headset-at-home\" target=\"_blank\">make it yourself<\/a>, or buy it semi-assembled for less than \u00a320.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.edgehill.ac.uk\/learningedge\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/130\/2014\/10\/IMG_20141002_155354.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-3786\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.edgehill.ac.uk\/learningedge\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/130\/2014\/10\/IMG_20141002_155354-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"My Google Cardboard\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.edgehill.ac.uk\/learningedge\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/130\/2014\/10\/IMG_20141002_155354-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.edgehill.ac.uk\/learningedge\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/130\/2014\/10\/IMG_20141002_155354-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.edgehill.ac.uk\/learningedge\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/130\/2014\/10\/IMG_20141002_155354-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a> As you can see I&#8217;ve added a velcro strap to make it hands free and <a title=\"Protect a Google Cardboard\" href=\"http:\/\/sugru.com\/gallery\/protect-a-google-cardboard\" target=\"_blank\">Sugru to protect it<\/a> from skin as it was getting used by a lot of people. A Bluetooth controller is also needed to use some Virtual Reality apps, but not all.<\/p>\n<p>There is a <a title=\"Google Cardboard App\" href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=com.google.samples.apps.cardboarddemo\" target=\"_blank\">dedicated Cardboard app<\/a> for Android devices which demonstrates potential uses; I&#8217;ve looked at this in detail in <a title=\"Google Cardboard and Virtual Reality\" href=\"http:\/\/peter-beaumont.blogspot.co.uk\/2014\/08\/google-cardboard-and-virtual-reality.html\" target=\"_blank\">another blog post<\/a>. There is also <a title=\"Chrome Experiments for Cardboard\" href=\"g.co\/chromevr\" target=\"_blank\">a web page that you can visit to experience more experiments<\/a>. The easiest way to create basic content yourself is by making <a title=\"Share the world in 360\u00ba with photo sphere\" href=\"http:\/\/www.google.co.uk\/maps\/about\/contribute\/photosphere\/\" target=\"_blank\">Photo Spheres<\/a> which newer (4.2+) Android devices can create using the default camera app. Another really good Android app to get you started is <a title=\"Tuscany Dive Android App\" href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=com.FabulousPixel.TuscanyDive\" target=\"_blank\">Tuscany Dive<\/a> which displays a 3D environment that you can explore, and doesn&#8217;t require a controller.<\/p>\n<p>As for possible uses in education we talked about ideas such as allowing new or potential students to view their rooms, or areas of campus, if they cannot access them for whatever reason. We wondered about using the headsets for Augmented Reality; the only AR example I&#8217;ve seen is the <a title=\"Cmoar AR RPG\" href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=com.Cmoar.CmoarARRPG\" target=\"_blank\">demo for a Role Playing Game<\/a>. In the long term we could perhaps do some of the things that we&#8217;ve used 3D Virtual Worlds like Second Life for, such as running virtual risk assessments and role plays. <a title=\"Effectiveness of virtual reality-based instruction on students' learning outcomes in K-12 and higher education: A meta-analysis\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0360131513002108\" target=\"_blank\">Merchant et al (2014)<\/a> undertook a meta-analysis of research into use of this &#8216;desktop-based virtual reality&#8217; in education, which might be a good starting point to explore what has already been learned in this area.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;re still quite a way from these technologies being ready for mainstream use; <a title=\"Gartner's 2014 Hype Cycle for Emerging Technologies\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/brucesterling\/14874228036\/\" target=\"_blank\">Gartner&#8217;s 2014 Hype Cycle for Emerging Technologies<\/a> estimates that it will be 5-10 years before Virtual Reality reaches the Plateau of Productivity. There are also many issues to overcome such as motion sickness.
