{"id":2596,"date":"2013-07-18T09:19:49","date_gmt":"2013-07-18T09:19:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.edgehill.ac.uk\/learningedge\/?p=2596"},"modified":"2013-07-18T09:19:49","modified_gmt":"2013-07-18T09:19:49","slug":"has-video-thrilled-the-students-so-far","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.edgehill.ac.uk\/learningedge\/2013\/07\/18\/has-video-thrilled-the-students-so-far\/","title":{"rendered":"Has Video Thrilled the Students so Far?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><span style=\"color: #888888\">How\u00a0<i style=\"font-style: italic\">video has been used to enhance engagement and the student learning experience on a blended learning programme<\/i><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000\">The Mathematics Specialist Teacher (MaST) Programme is a blended course for serving primary maths teachers aimed at improving subject knowledge, pedagogy and collaborating with colleagues in school.\u00a0 It includes Conference Days with nationally recognised speakers, Local Meetings led by maths consultants and online learning materials, all of which are linked via the VLE.\u00a0 As online materials can too often be very dry, we have included a variety of approaches to provide students with a positive experience, including the use of videos in various contexts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.teachersmedia.co.uk\/videos\/ks1-ks2-maths-just-division\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2598  alignright\" title=\"KS 1\/2 Maths - Just Division\" alt=\"Click to go to TeachersMedia.co.uk: KS 1\/2 Maths - Just Division\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.edgehill.ac.uk\/learningedge\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/130\/2013\/07\/temp2.png\" width=\"300\" height=\"388\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.edgehill.ac.uk\/learningedge\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/130\/2013\/07\/temp2.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.edgehill.ac.uk\/learningedge\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/130\/2013\/07\/temp2-231x300.png 231w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">Within the learning materials, links to video clips on sites like\u00a0YouTube\u00a0help exemplify both the theoretical and practical ideas the students cover. For example, how to use practical resources and visualisation techniques to support the understanding of difficult concepts such as \u201c3 divided by a half\u201d (The answer is NOT 1 \u00bd \u2026 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.teachersmedia.co.uk\/videos\/ks1-ks2-maths-just-division\" target=\"_blank\">Click to \u00a0&#8216;Watch and Learn&#8217;!<\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">Via discussion boards, students are also encouraged to share links to useful videos.\u00a0 They are using these resources within their practice on a daily basis, so it seems natural to get them to share examples of good practice. For example, this idea of a \u2018Fraction museum\u2019 was posted by a student &#8211; here&#8217;s the link to the YouTube video: <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=lizNJthlpr8\" target=\"_blank\">Fraction Lesson: teach your class fractions with Math Man<\/a>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">One of the key requests in the recent Edge Hill survey into Students\u2019 ideal VLEs was for the opportunity to be able to watch the lecture again later. Throughout the programme, we ask for permission to film our keynote speakers, and now have many of their sessions available within Blackboard.\u00a0 This means not only can students revisit lectures at a later time, students who were unable to attend or missed a speaker who delivered at an alternative geographical location, can still have access (although we do stress that this is not quite the same as attending in person\u2026!)
