Wikis were originally created as a very simple way to put information online, that all users could edit. They weren&#8217;t designed to look pretty, just to be quick and easy to use.<\/p>\n<p>Wikis have developed over time and now it can be hard to see the difference between a content management system and a wiki. Generally though Wikis contain things like widely editable pages, a page history, records of discussions about the page&#8217;s development, and the ability to subscribe to notifications of changes to the page. Duffy and Bruns (2008) provide a good quick overview of wikis and their uses in &#8216;<a href=\"http:\/\/eprints.qut.edu.au\/5398\/1\/5398.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">The use of blogs, wikis and RSS in education: A conversation of possibilities<\/a>&#8216;.<\/p>\n<p>As some interesting examples of non-education specific uses have a look at:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wikipatterns.com\/display\/wikipatterns\/Wikipatterns\" target=\"_blank\">Wikipatterns<\/a> &#8211; A collaboratively updated book about different ways in which wikis can be used<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/pulpbard.wikispaces.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Pulp Bard<\/a> &#8211; Colaborative project to translate the Pulp Fiction film script into a Shakespearean equivalent<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Main_Page\" target=\"_blank\">Wikipedia (English Version)<\/a> &#8211; The largest wiki<\/li>\n<li>Wikia &#8211; A site hosting 1000s of wikis where the communities have collected information about things like <a href=\"http:\/\/travel.wikia.com\/wiki\/Travel_Wiki\" target=\"_blank\">travel<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/elderscrolls.wikia.com\/wiki\/The_Elder_Scrolls_Wiki\" target=\"_blank\">games<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/starwars.wikia.com\/wiki\/Main_Page\" target=\"_blank\">films<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Many educators have used in Wikis in Higher Education. Some uses we are aware of at Edge Hill include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/ltd-edgehill.blogspot.co.uk\/2009\/12\/does-web-20-benefit-students.html\" target=\"_blank\">Encouraging writing at an early stage of a student\u2019s university career<\/a> (Rob Spence)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/library.iated.org\/view\/SHORTT2009WIK\" target=\"_blank\">Facilitating collaboration on critiques of set texts<\/a> (Damien Short)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.co.uk\/search?q=world+cafe+teaching\" target=\"_blank\">Running &#8216;World Caf\u00e9&#8217; style activities online<\/a> (Garry McDowell)<\/li>\n<li>Administrative uses such as sharing board papers inside and outside the university using a Campus Pack wiki (Undergraduate Professional Development Board)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/edgehill-ac-uk-prod.campuspack.eu\/Users\/DAVID.CALLAGHAN_1\/Davids_FAQs#\" target=\"_blank\">Sharing lists of Frequently Asked Question<\/a>s [nb: EHU login required] (David Callaghan)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Other uses elsewhere in Higher Education include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"ftp:\/\/ftp.cc.gatech.edu\/pub\/gvu\/tr\/2000\/00-19.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Georgia Tech used wikis for many different activities<\/a>, including collaborative FAQs, cross-semester discussions and collaborative writing activities.<\/li>\n<li>The University of California have \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/banana-slug.soe.ucsc.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">one class where the students are evaluated entirely on their contributions to a public wiki<\/a>\u201d (<a href=\"http:\/\/computinged.wordpress.com\/2011\/11\/15\/no-more-swikis-end-of-the-constructionist-web-at-georgia-tech\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mark Guzdial<\/a>). It\u2019s a Biology class where they are using the wiki to \u201cassemble and annotate the genome of the UCSC mascot Ariolimax dolichophallus, the slender banana slug\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Mark Phillipson (in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.press.umich.edu\/titleDetailDesc.do?id=234436\" target=\"_blank\">Cummings and Bartson, eds. 2008<\/a>) proposes a taxonomy of five types of wiki use (resource, presentation, gateway, simulation, and illumination) to help newcomers understand the range of potential uses.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Potential benefits reported have included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Wikis &#8220;supporting social-constructivist models of pedagogy&#8221; (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1080\/14703297.2010.518428\" target=\"_blank\">Feng Su and Chris Beaumont, 2010<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>Wikis &#8220;invite collaboration and tolerate dissension, moving toward consensus and defined disagreement&#8221; (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.press.umich.edu\/titleDetailDesc.do?id=234436\" target=\"_blank\">Cummings and Barton, 2008<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>Students can benefit from quick peer feedback when there is a vibrant community. (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1080\/14703297.2010.518428\" target=\"_blank\">Feng Su and Chris Beaumont, 2010<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>Wikis can be used to promote integration of learning &#8211; i.e. &#8220;the ability to connect, apply, and\/or synthesize information, knowledge and skills across varied contexts&#8221; (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cideronline.org\/conference\/presentation1.cfm?pid=702\" target=\"_blank\">Barber, 2012<\/a>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Potential issues to be aware of, include those related to orientation and usability of the technology.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>As with other collaborative online tools you might find that &#8220;inadequate socialisation at the start of the collaborative activity was a key obstacle in conducting group projects or activities at a distance&#8221; (<a href=\"http:\/\/virtualworldwatch.net\/2010\/03\/24\/open-university-in-virtual-worlds-an-update\/\" target=\"_blank\">Dr Shailey Minocha<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;When participants fail to form functional groups in their wikis, their ability to engage with the task and to form a community of enquiry&#8230; is impaired.&#8221; (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.researchinlearningtechnology.net\/index.php\/rlt\/article\/view\/16149\" target=\"_blank\">Benson, et al, 2012<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>Finding the right wiki tool for your particular use. &#8220;usability is the key attribute for a positive user experience&#8221; (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1080\/13614560701712667\" target=\"_blank\">Shailey Minocha and Peter G. Thomas, 2007<\/a>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I&#8217;ve started making <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/spreadsheet\/ccc?key=0AutugrKZR4DZdG80RWJxNi10WTZhbHVOQUhIY2lmaEE#gid=0\" target=\"_blank\">notes around a few articles<\/a> and my list might help you get started exploring the literature.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, the following videos have been created to show how certain simple things can be done using Campus Pack wikis.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.screenr.com\/GqW8\" target=\"_blank\">Adding a Wiki to a Blackboard section<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.screenr.com\/duW8\" target=\"_blank\">Adding a page to the wiki, and linking between page<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.screenr.com\/UtW8\" target=\"_blank\">Setting permissions for viewing and editing the wiki<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.screenr.com\/4tW8\" target=\"_blank\">Adding Widgets for extra functionality<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.edgehill.ac.uk\/learningedge\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/130\/2011\/06\/Peter_Beaumont2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-241\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.edgehill.ac.uk\/learningedge\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/130\/2011\/06\/Peter_Beaumont2.jpg\" alt=\"Picture of the author\" width=\"100\" height=\"125\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Peter Beaumont<br \/>\nLearning Technologist<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Campus Pack is a new addition to Learning Edge and one of the tools that comes with it is a Wiki tool.
