If&nbsp;you&nbsp;were to ask&nbsp;any&nbsp;one&nbsp;of us for advice on how to make a document&nbsp;accessible,&nbsp;we could give you&nbsp;a bucket load of&nbsp;tips.&nbsp;It has now&nbsp;become second nature&nbsp;for&nbsp;us to use refinements&nbsp;to&nbsp;make our reports and presentations 100% accessible.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However,&nbsp;most&nbsp;of us continue to bash&nbsp;out an email on the keyboard without&nbsp;considering&nbsp;our dyslexic&nbsp;friend,&nbsp;or how it will translate to&nbsp;audio&nbsp;for&nbsp;the partially sighted&nbsp;students in our cohort.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.edgehill.ac.uk\/learningedge\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/130\/2021\/08\/image.jpeg\" alt=\"a key inserted into a lock\" class=\"wp-image-10065\" width=\"360\" height=\"202\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.edgehill.ac.uk\/learningedge\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/130\/2021\/08\/image.jpeg 618w, https:\/\/blogs.edgehill.ac.uk\/learningedge\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/130\/2021\/08\/image-300x168.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.edgehill.ac.uk\/learningedge\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/130\/2021\/08\/image-500x281.jpeg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 360px) 100vw, 360px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The fact is, it\u2019s&nbsp;easy&nbsp;to make a couple of quick&nbsp;enhancements&nbsp;to the email template to ensure that all emails follow basic accessibility principles.&nbsp;Giving&nbsp;equal&nbsp;thought&nbsp;to&nbsp;formatting an email as you would to a Word document&nbsp;is crucial. For&nbsp;example,&nbsp;using heading structures and&nbsp;detailed alternative text when adding an image&nbsp;helps&nbsp;the&nbsp;partially sighted person&nbsp;understand the context of the&nbsp;document.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Outlook offers the same accessibility features as other Microsoft&nbsp;products;&nbsp;a few seconds spent checking will ensure your important&nbsp;content&nbsp;is actioned by readers.&nbsp;There is nothing worse for a dyslexic than being faced with lines and lines of text.&nbsp; They seem to mingle into one and become over facing, so keep emails succinct and to the point. Less is more.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"706\" height=\"470\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.edgehill.ac.uk\/learningedge\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/130\/2021\/08\/image-1.jpeg\" alt=\"mobile phone screen showing inbox\" class=\"wp-image-10080\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.edgehill.ac.uk\/learningedge\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/130\/2021\/08\/image-1.jpeg 706w, https:\/\/blogs.edgehill.ac.uk\/learningedge\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/130\/2021\/08\/image-1-300x200.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.edgehill.ac.uk\/learningedge\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/130\/2021\/08\/image-1-451x300.jpeg 451w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 706px) 100vw, 706px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Here are some helpful tips to remember when composing an email:<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Use&nbsp;clear fonts&nbsp;<\/li><li>Use&nbsp;a larger font size (12+)&nbsp;<\/li><li>Use 1.5 line spacing&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><li>Format your email consistently&nbsp;<\/li><li>Add alt text to your images&nbsp;<\/li><li>Avoid image only emails&nbsp;<\/li><li>Make sure it is consistent, defined and easily digestible&nbsp;<\/li><li>Check the colour contrast using&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/webaim.org\/resources\/contrastchecker\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">WebAim<\/a>&nbsp;<\/li><li>Use the accessibility checker before sending&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Take a look below at some further ways in which you too can now ensure that your emails are fully accessible, taking into consideration important aspects such as colour contrast levels, using a digital signature and adding alt text to images\/screenshots. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Poor Contrast Levels<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A&nbsp;common mistake is using poor colour contrast.
