Upgrade to the eShare repository

Please make a note in your diaries.  On May 2nd 2017 our eShare repository will be upgraded to the latest version of the core ePrints repository software.  We have been informed that for 48 hours, the repository will be ‘at risk’.  Access to the repository will be frozen, therefore staff will be unable to upload or edit resources, however, it will continue to provide access to resources as read only. The upgrade will begin on the morning of the 2nd May and should be completed by the end of 3rd May.

We wanted to provide advance warning as the there will be an element of disruption and apologise for any inconvenience but hope the new features within the upgrade will be beneficial for staff.

Along with some workflow and interface changes the upgrade will feature:

  • Improved video and audio playback using a HTML 5 player for cross browser and greater device support.
  • Inline Previews – Updated inline previews of video, audio, PDF’s and office based documents, removing the need to download the file first.
  • Version Control – Versioning of documents now provides a true visible catalogue of uploaded documents to your resource within eShare.
  • Creative Commons 4.0 – Apply the latest creative commons licences to your work to permit use, reuse or redistribution by others.
  • Share your learning materials quickly and easily with anyone with a simple submission and lightweight metadata collection
  • Upload any type of file (Video, Audio, Images, Powerpoint, Word, Zip, iSpring etc.)
  • Use tags and collections to organise your learning materials according to their subject matter

How to add your Rebus List to your Blackboard course menu

As staff get ready for a new term we have produced some helpful information about how to add your online reading list to module.

1. With Edit Mode on click the add menu item button on the top left of the course menu and select Web Link.

rl1

2. Enter the link Name: ‘Reading List’ and URL you have been emailed from Learning Services: https://edgehill.rebuslist.com/list.php?list_id=xxxx and make: ‘Available to Users’.  Then click on Submit.  You can use the title ‘Reading List’ or something which you feel your students would recognise.rl2

3. This link will appear by default at the bottom of your course menu. Click on the drop down arrow to the right of the link name and select Set Link to Open in a New Window.

rl3

4. Finally, move the link so that it appears directly below: Module Information. (Hover over the item, click and drag into position).

Doing something different with data – using infographics to showcase your research

The 5th EHU Student eLearning survey closed in the spring of this year and we will be sharing the full report and feedback shortly, but we wanted to highlight some of the headlines using infographics.  Using pictures to tell a story is nothing new but we have been looking over the past few months at how we can represent research data in an infographic.  We can see many opportunities for communicating to our customers the messages from what in the past, they might have seemed like dry or complex data.  Seeing the trends, figures and statistics which are contained in research can be really hard sometimes but the infographic brings the message to the foreground in a visually appealing way.  Using a graphic can also very easily give your statistic some context, again, something which can be hard when you are writing a report.

A key element of the annual eLearning survey is seeing the trends in terms of the use of TEL and the VLE and also the technology the students are using to access learning.

Here are 5 infographics showcasing the following; the increase in student satisfaction and interaction with Learning Edge; personal means of accessing the internet (we all know where that one is going!); preferred place of study on campus – it is still the library but we will be tracking in future how students are using our new student HUB; the technology students feel could be best used in terms of their learning; and bringing us back to our campus and the facilities, the increase in students using wireless on campus.

We hope you find these graphics more appealing that just a percentage statistic and we will be sharing more technology and Learning Edge data soon, along with some library statistics so if we can excite people about book issues by using graphics, it’s a result!

Find out more about Learning Edge

Have you ever thought, what really is Learning Edge, what does it contain, why is it seen as eight tools in one!!!  What are the eight tools and do they effect me?

The Learning Technology Development Team are holding a pop up road show in the foyer of the University Library.  You can go along on Thursday 22nd November 2012 11.30 am – 2.30pm to speak to members of the team about all things technology, mobile, or VLE.

The road show is for everyone – staff and students can come along to ask questions, share any issues and also share good practice.  We have mobile devices to show you how valuable the Blackboard mobile app can be in keeping in touch with your course and your students.  We will also have support and information about using other apps for resources.

We will have some freebies to give away – you can have a 1GB Learning Services wrist band if you tell us on a flip camera video (helpful staff will be around with the camera) what technologies help you with your studies – it can be anything!

Looking forward to seeing you

The Learning Technology Development Team

Developing Digital Excellence – Come with us on a mobile field trip

Are you a member of staff who wants to connect even more with your students who are using their mobile devices?

This development session, as part of the Learning Services Developing Digital Excellence staff development programme, could be perfect for you.

Join us on Thursday 25th October 12.00pm – 1.00pm.  We are starting in the Staff Development training room on the 2nd Floor of the LINC but from there it’s out on a field trip.

Blackboard Mobile Learn has now been available for over a year and we have seen use by both students and staff increase significantly in that time.

This session will take you through where you can use mobile potentially in your teaching, learning, training and support to demonstrate the appeal it has to its users.

We will be taking you on a mobile field trip to collect resources, materials and ideas using your mobile phone or device (or you can borrow one for the session) to upload to Blackboard.

Book your place via the HR wiki
