Let’s dance!

Started to get a bit more involved in the extra things going on around campus lately. As money dries up the extra curricular side of uni life suddenly becomes much more appealing as more than anything they can be something to do for the night which doesn’t cost too much – ( you can feel very trapped sometimes living in halls at Uni).

Went a week or so ago to a lecture by a Lecturer from Birmingham Uni discuss surveillance, terrorism & the police in the Western world. Was extremely informative, and really nice to learn about something new except perhaps a lot more relaxing not having to take notes like you would in your course lectures. An hour before, and an hour after the lecture there was a chance to drink a good amount of free wine & chat to people about the lecture. Both the free wine & the light hearted discussions went down really well!!!

Thought it would be a good idea to go and see something completely different to that this week. Went to watch the first year dance groups perform the dances they had been working on so far this year. It blew me away. Mostly contemporary dance pieces lasting about 12 minutes each. They were just funky & it was nice to see something completely different from the History side of things which is of course what i’m usually involved in. They really could dance, it looked like they were flying half the time!

Any way, long story short – there is always lots of ways to spend your time learning about the world, your uni & getting some free wine. Long live Edge Hill : )

Worth posting a blog purely dedicated to this night out. The biggest night out of the year, which happens 4 times a year. Think 10,000 students from the Liverpool area, think ‘old school’ fancy dress, think cheap drinks, think 6am entry times & you have got yourself a night to remember. Liverpool really is as good a night out as everyone says!

Couple of photos there to have a look at. Truly though, if you have ever been to Ibiza, Magaluf etc – it’s like that. Or if you haven’t been on these kinds of holidays you can get a real good taste of them, except freezing cold! That’s half the fun, though 🙂

Indie & Alternative night +++ Comedy nights

Some new ‘night out’ possibilities in Ormskirk in the new year! Firstly, there’s an indie night on Mondays at Alpine which is the only one of its kind in our area so that has proved very popular. See below for details of what could be in store for you next year….

The Clubnight that keeps on Giving: The naughtier side of Uni Life!

As well as this, there has been a load of comedy nights at the rose bowl theater on campus. Been really popular, a cheap fun way to spend a night with your halls or course mates.

On the History side of things, it’s all stepped up a gear. More reading & more revision, but everyone’s in the same boat. A good bit of advice would be to try and work with course colleagues outside of lecture time as everyone always seems to have different ideas about the same subject which can only be useful!

thanks for reading, get in touch with any questions about anything Edge Hill related if you think of any 🙂

Week 1, a taste of terms to come

Just started a couple of modules this week. For ‘Imperialism, liberation & globalization’ I have been luck enough to have Roger Spalding as my lecturer and seminar tutor. He is the head of History and it’s definitely for a reason. In an introductory lecture, I managed to learn about five French words, the fact that i need to learn Chinese and that Britain are exploiting Ghana through ridiculous loans. He was vibrant & passionate about the subject.

Looks like we’re going to be learning about how empires got built up until the 20th Century, and then after there wasn’t much left of the world to discover the world powers such as Britain, Germany, Soviet Union & America begun to turn on each other which eventually led to several wars. After this we’ll be looking at current situations in the Middle East and what lessons and similarities can be found with the past Century. It looks like the best module so far & I will be sure to update everyone on what we cover – next week, The Russian Revolution!

As always thank you for reading and feel free to get in touch with absolutely any questions.

Term 2, feeling good

Back to Uni now after a 3 week break for Christmas. Like with most subjects, History steps up a gear in term 2. There will be a good portion more reading to complete & perhaps more assignments to hand in. But, at least now everyone knows their way around campus & the kind of standard required to do well on the course.

Very much looking forward to the unit on imperialism & globalization. going to be quite a broad subject still as it is a first year module but I have not studied the topic individually before & as a Historian it is always a decent idea to broaden you knowledge as much as possible.

Came back to uni with a radio, and a small work table so feeling very prepared. Like everyone always says to me you’re first year absolutely flies by & before you know it there are 5 months before you become a second year and are a fresher no longer. One bit of advice I could give everyone about the course is to try and read ahead, rather than just ‘keep up’ because things can pile up especially when there are more than one essay deadline due in the same week.

thanks for reading as always, & please get in touch with any questions at all you might have. happy new year 🙂

Holidays are coming……

Now then, the first term is officially over, no more testing the waters. You know exactly what to expect when you return in January. When to start assignments in order to get the best books out of the library, when to take the time out to phone your parents to let them know you’re still alive and when the best nights out are.

Can’t wait to start the next term, glad I chose to come to Edge hill University!

As always don’t forget to get in touch with any questions about History, Edge hill or Ormskirk.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Here is a nice photo of a creation we did in my halls of me and a couple of friends 🙂

Not so secret Santa

The E.M.B. not so secret Santa was as expected a massive success. Everyone involved thought long and hard about their respective gifts, with the highlight unquestionably being Sean  Burril’s receipt of an ‘art deco-esque’ chair complete with shower head and can of Fosters. The present giving as a whole was a banterous affair leaving the entire halls eagerly awaiting the return of Banter Claus. Till next year HO! HO! HO!

as always, feel free to get in touch with any questions regarding uni, the history course or Ormskirk in general. Happy xmas everyone 🙂

Santa is on his way : – )

Getting to that time now, everyone finishes in a couple of weeks. There’s a different air about the uni at the moment. People finishing modules or preparing for exams, and everyone seems to be running out of money so you can tell that there is a big focus on one final push before the Xmas break. It’s freezing here now, and dark early. A very different kind of atmosphere at halls, no more blankets on the grass and football out side : (

BUT, there’s a lot more film watching, hot chocolate and playing games inside with everyone. There’s a really peaceful home away from home kind of feel to things now. Everyone is excited about the holidays and spending some time with their family. Some people I know from Newcastle or London haven’t been home for three months so they are understandably really excited!

I myself am just finishing up an essay on the First Crusade & preparing for a short exam analysing Historical texts.

As always, follow me on twitter and feel very free to ask any questions about the History course or Edge hill in general. I am here to help and would love it if i could 🙂
