Things for your room, Making Edge Hill feel like home


Moving to a new room all by yourself can be difficult and even a scary experience. This place is going to be all yours, and making it feel like home is an important part of relaxing yourself. There are loads of things that you could bring with you, but incase you were looking for some suggestions here are three things that I think all students should take, to make their new room feel like home.


Bedding

Something that you touch and interact every day is going to be imporatnt. Your beeding is not only something that you have to touch, but look at. Having your bedding from home can make you room feel that bit more friendly. Also, just having the smell of the same fabric conditioner makes a big difference.


Posters

Having something to decorate your walls is great. You can have motivational posters, or even like myself a map of my home country. If you have some posters in your room at home it might be a good idea to take them with you and hang them in your new room.


Furniture

Taking small pieces of furniture from home is another way to make your room feel like home. A show rack, or coat rack. Radiator cover or table cover. Whatever it is, you will always know when you look at it that it came from home. So dont go buying all new furniture just yet.

Staying through the summer – Living in Ormskirk year round

Ormskirk is a busy place with people coming and going for Edge Hill University during term time. Outside of that it can seem peaceful without the hussle and bussle of students. So living here for a prolonged holiday, through the summer, can be abit daunting. You might find yourself without friends that you had made in University itself. But for many foreign students, even though the world is constantly becoming smaller with low cost airlines, living here year round is a fact of life. So here are my three tips for living in Ormskirk through the summer months.


Get Ahead by finding some work that fits your degree. Plenty of firms will have summer internships for you to get ahead and pack into your CV. Apart from that the cash is great. Could save enough for a holiday, or even a car because you will have plenty of time to get your hours in.


Discover Ormskirk and find yourself all the amazing places that you would be otherwise too busy with study or class to visit. There are loads of these, Ruff Woods to the Water Tower!  Or check out the local shops, there are plenty of places you might not have visited before.


Find the fun at all of the local events going on. Comedy night at Mylo, Quiz night at Styles or just a quiet pint in the Horseshoe you will always find some vibrant night life in the town during summer. The weekend markets will give you something to do in the morning also.

When thinking about what I wanted to talk about in this weeks blog, it hit me almost with comedic timing. I got the flu. I thought about the first time I got the flu at University. October 2017. Waking up with a sore throat and a headache I knew it was going to be a bad day, and the next wouldn’t be much better. I was right, it got worse before it got better. It got me thinking about how I make myself feel better, and I thought i’d share my top three tips with you all, because you will most likely end up with the flu at some point too.


Paracetamol

Alright this one is basic, but get some Paracetamol and keep them in your room for when you do need them. You never want to walk out when your ill to get some, and its worth having them for when you need it. They are a essential tool in helping yourself feel better throughout the day.


Water and diluting juice

Keep yourself hydrated throughout the day, drink water and its probbably even worth having some juice too for taste. This is a big one, and you probbably know it already but its easy to forget. Keep yourself nice and refreshed throughout the day.


Good food

Having food is not only going to keep your energized but it can even distract you from that headache thats been killing you all day. Soup is a good start, but fruit like Oranges and Pineapple are amazing at pepping you up. Its worth getting something your going to enjoy when you are sick, the better you feel the faster you will get over it.

Packing for the first year of University 🏫💼

Hello!

Summer is approaching at an insane rate, and the fact that I am nearly no longer a first year is dawning on me. It honestly feels like I’ve been here for a couple of months – time really does fly when you’re having fun. I remember googling and search on Youtube for what I need to pack and what the rooms are like.

My tip? Don’t do this:

Honestly, the car was so full, I wouldn’t be surprised if it was nearly touching the ground. I packed too much, and it’s understandable but really, it’s not necessary. I’ve started to move my stuff, a suitcase at a time, back home already just to make moving out easier than it was moving in – and I’m on the bottom floor!

Here’s what you need to bring on move in day:

Pillows, a duvet and bedding to go with it
Toilet roll, even if it’s just one roll for the night
Toiletries – Body wash, hand soap, tooth brush and paste
Phones, laptops, chargers – all the tech stuff
A notebook, pens and pencils – things for lectures and seminars
All your clothes that you will need, don’t forget pyjamas and socks!
Shoes, comfy ones and going out ones
Washing basket, coat hangers, an airer, towels
Plates/bowls, cutlery and mugs, pots and pans if not provided
Bring all your university paperwork, any summer work that has been tasked and your passport
Food!

I would say that these are the absolute essentials that you will need to bring for move in day. Of course you may want to bring other things like pictures and blankets and other nice decorative things to make it feel cosy.

Side note: post-it notes may be a good idea:

First week can be daunting if you’re not a party-goer or drinker of alcohol. I don’t mind a nice drink with friends but I’m not a big club person. However, it’s nice to get out and about in that first week and meet people who are like you. I found a nice group of people who preferred the low-key thing too. Just get out there, your people are out there too!

Getting more than you asked for… 😱

Hello! 

I thought I’d share with you a little adventure I/we went on today, and why this made me feel very grateful for being at Edge Hill University.

As part of the Primary Education with QTS course, you choose a major specialism e.g. English, Maths, Science or Modern Foreign Languages, then a minor e.g. any of the foundation subjects (EAL and SENd are also an option!).

I chose History as my minor specialism and today we all ventured down to Liverpool to undertake a very historical and informative trip.

We all really enjoyed today and it’s a nice break from all the academia.

While I walking around today I couldn’t help but think how amazing this course, and university, really is. To get the opportunity to learn about such amazing history, on a teaching course for one, but also all the other extra bits Edge Hill do to make this place stand out from the rest.

You can learn a language! 📖

There is a Language Centre on campus that provide various different opportunities for you to study a language. This can be with your course or as a module if you are based in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, or, like me you can attend evening classes. These are open to students, staff and public, but as a registered EHU student, you pay £0! An amazing opportunity to take advantage of while you’re here.

The Student Opportunity Fund! 💰

“You can apply for up to £2,000 to support a career-enhancing project, initiative or opportunity that will enrich your student experience and enable you to stand out in a competitive environment.”

I have recently joined a networking group (#SDGNetwork) that is paid for by the SOF and it allows a group of us to better understand the importance of sustainability, how we can live more sustainable but also how to teach this to pupils in primary schools. It is an amazing experience to be a part of and I can’t believe it is covered for us under this opportunity.

I will write about this network in the future, and if you are coming to Edge Hill as a student in September 2019, you will no doubt meet some of us in a lecture or seminar! Thanks for reading!

Three Ways to Stay Fit Without the Gym!

Hey everyone!

I love the gym at Edge Hill University, it has everything you need to keep fit and stay healthy. Although, if you don’t like the thought of signing up for the gym for any reason, I thought I would share some of my tips to keep fit and healthy without having to join gym.


1. Walking/Running 

I know I have mentioned walking on this blog multiple times but I cannot express enough how lucky we are to have a campus with such scenic and peaceful walking spots. 

Every morning, I go for a walk around the running track and up around the ‘trim-trail’ which is located just behind the new sports centre. It has amazing views of the campus and a little bit of Ormskirk.

I would also take myself into Ruff Woods on Ruff Lane and walk the track around the forest where you can find lots of cool wooden sculptures!

2. YouTube!

If you don’t even feel like leaving the flat, why

not use your phone or laptop, type in some at home workouts and get your sweat on in the comfort of your own flat. Even better, if you still feel like there is not enough room, go to the flat kitchen and ask your flat-mates to join in! No better fresher’s week ice-breaker than a flat workout. 

Personally I love doing some Blogilates, Sarah’s Day, and The Body Coach workouts when I can’t seem to make myself walk the 20 steps it takes me to get to the gym…

3. Invest!

Getting your hands on some kettle-bells, dumb-bells and a yoga mat is so easy and you can do so many of workouts in your room and still keep just as fit and healthy!

Pop down to the local Argos in Ormskirk and get yourself some weights and don’t worry about having to carry them all the way back to campus because we have a perfectly handy bus that comes to and from the campus to town every 20 minutes 😉

 

 


And there you have it, three ways you can stay fit and healthy without the gym, right here on the Edge Hill Campus! Maybe this will even inspire you to join the gym after trying out some of these tips?

I personally love the gym and use it very often but I also take advantage of the amazing walking facilities we have on campus!

Applying for Jobs as a Student

Hi guys, in previous blogs I have talked about working for Edge Hill and the opportunities available, but for this blog I thought since we are coming up to the summer when most students are looking for work, I would talk about applying for part time-work to compliment your studies and a few things to keep in mind.


Get your CV checked: If you are an Edge Hill student then you can get your CV checked by the careers team. This can be very useful as they can give you advice on changes to make that you might not have thought of otherwise, alternatively if you aren’t a uni student yet, then someone you know or a careers advisor, teacher etc. might be useful to ask as you never know how a second opinion could give you a different view.application


Apply everywhere: If you see a job that’s doable and within range then apply, even if you don’t think you will get it, applying for lot’s of roles means you are always going to have a better chance of getting something, there’s no limit to how many applications you can put in, so you might as well!


Interview Prep: If you are lucky enough to get an interview then it’s time to prepare, do your research on the business you have applied for. But even more importantly think of answers to some typical interview questions you may be asked. Common examples could include ‘a time you dealt with a pressurised situation’ or ‘a time you worked successfully as part of a team’. The more interviews you do the more used to these types of questions you will become and answers will come to you more naturally.


Be patient: Chances are depending on how lucky you are or how much experience you have, finding a job could take a while, so it’s important to keep motivated. Students are sometimes less sought out, as employers could see them as being less available because of study commitments and if your like me and live between countries for home and uni then finding a suitable job can be even more of a challenge but the important thing is to keep your options open and keep applying.

Edge Hill has by far some of the best accomodation in all of the UK when it comes to students, and it has the trophys to prove it. Voted best accomodation by Student Crowd, WhatUni and the National Student Housing Awards you would be hard pressed to find anywhere that comes close to both the experience and the quality of the on campus accomodation on offer.

To celebrate this I want to give you three reasons why you as a new first year will love living on campus that you might not find on the blurb for these awards.


You’ve got a place to sleep when you come falling out of the SU bar at two in the morning with your flatmates. No need to worry about finding a taxi, or rushing for the last train. You’ve got a bed waiting and even some left over pasta in the kitchen. Life is good. Your not so lucky mates can head to the 24/7 Catalyst to study in the library till morning.


Wake up, walk out, class is around the corner and after your late night this is handy, saves you rolling in late to a full lecture hall. Safe in the knowledge that the automaticly locking door closed behind you, everything in your room is safe. Even better, if its a Friday the cleaners will be there at 10 to make sure your kitchen is sparkling clean.


Turn your heating on because its cold and because you are paying bills included in your accomodation you wont have to worry about it. Go out and stick on the TV in the kitchen, because guess what? The T.V. License is taken care of. Have a shower, that hot water might aswell be free because you’ve already paid for it. Dont waste it though, think of captian planet.


Thats three, but here’s the big one.

You’ll love living on campus, and thats great. But you’ll love it even more when you move out into your own house. Living on campus is great, and an excellent way to get your ready to move out by yourself. Enjoy it while it lasts, but try and pick up on the little things, like budgeting your money for your own bills so when you are trying to pay for household bills like electrictiy if and when you move out it’s not a struggle.

How to Give a Good Presentation

Hi everyone, since we are approaching deadline time, some of you may be facing the prospect of having to deliver a presentation, either on your own or as part of a group, but don’t sweat here’s some things that will help make your life easier.


1. Delegate: If it’s a group presentation than deciding who is covering what topics beforehand is vital and when I mean beforehand I mean not five minutes before as that just confuses everyone, instead while your group is creating the presentation is a good time to get it sorted. This saves you from awkward gaps of silence where you would have to inevitably wait ten seconds for whoever’s turn it is to realise they should be talking, nightmare.


2. Visuals: With your presentation, will mostly likely come a Powerpoint now when I was in school I would just put lots of info onto a slide and throw in some random transitions for cool effect. But honestly, you are better off keeping your slides concise, bullet pointed and without any weird transitions, it looks better for the lecturer, it’s easier for you to read if you get lost and it saves the powerpoint logopossibility of the transitions taking ages and stressing you out, or some mega loud sound effect you never heard on the library computer shattering everyone’s eardrums!


3. Practice: This can really help, once you’ve got your whole presentation sorted, just stand up and deliver it as if it’s the real thing, do this in front of people if you want or on your own, doing this at least a couple of times before the actual thing could save you a lot of stuttering and confusion  if it turns out a sentence doesn’t make sense.presentation


4. Bring notes with you: When your standing up doing the presentation it’s easy to get confused, it happens to us all so when it does, having notes means you can quickly check what your supposed to be saying and you might even have left yourself some pointers for that exact moment. Powerpoint has a notes function below the slides, or if your really up for it you can make cue cards or something equally clever.


In any case while presentations can be daunting, they are also, I find one of the less time-consuming forms of assessment which can only be a good thing, right?

All things Gym at Edge Hill University 🏋🏽‍♀️💪🏼

Hello!

Has anyone been to an Applicant Visit or Open day yet here at Edge Hill University? Did you get to have a look around the campus, more specifically, the gym? If not, don’t worry, everything you need to know about Edge Hill Sport is right here!

Timings and Memberships🕘💰:

The sports centre, this includes the gym, is open 7am – 10pm on weekdays, closing an hour earlier on Friday (9pm). The weekend timings are 9am – 5pm.
The swimming pool is open on Mondays and Wednesdays 7am – 9pm. Tuesday and Thursday’s timings are a little different. They are open 7am-9am then 11am – 9pm. Again, Friday they close an hour earlier: 7am – 8pm. Weekend timings are 9am – 4pm.

This year, they offered a ‘residential’ scheme for first years. You were entitled to four weeks free and after that, you can pay £80 for the year, or just opt out. An absolute bargain.

Residential membership

“Students that live on campus are entitled to try out our Premier membership for a trial period of up to 4-weeks from Welcome Sunday on 16 September until 13 October, with the option to then take out our NEW ‘Resident’ membership, which allows full Premier membership for the remainder of the 40-week accommodation contract. You will need to visit Reception in person to activate the trial period and subsequent membership. For our March / April intake of Nursing students, you are entitled to a similar offer to the above with a trial period until 28 April, with the option to then continue in paid membership until 14 September.”

 

What’s on offer? 🏋🏽‍♀️

The Edge Hill University sports centre provides so many opportunities for students. On the residential scheme, you can use every area the centre provides. They ask you to attend an induction to make sure you’re familiar with where everything is or how to use certain equipment – I found this really helpful. They also offer personal training sessions that you can book either alone, or in a group of 3.

My favourite is all the exercise classes they offer. They do everything, from Body Con, Box Fit, Circuits, HIIT to Kettlefit, Pilates, Spin, Step, Yoga and many more. The best thing I’ve found about these classes is they are accessible to all – they allow and plan for different levels of fitness so don’t ever feel afraid of starting a class. Everyone is really friendly and welcoming and the people who run the classes are really lovely and helpful.

Yoga is definitely my favourite class to take. I’ll do a more in-depth post about that next time but for now, I hope you have enjoyed reading all about the wonderful Sports Centre we have here at Edge Hill.
