Staying Fit, What Gym Options Are Available to You

While at uni eating takeouts might become more frequent or even just eating more junk food when you don’t want to cook, so maybe the possibility of going to the gym seems more reasonable now then at home, so I am going to give you a few pointers to what’s available and what you can expect to pay.

Edge Hill Sport: If your living on campus this should be the only place worth considering, as deals go there residency membership is a bargain. £80 for a full 40 weeks of premium membership which includes use of all facilities at any time of day, not bad eh? If you live off campus you will have to pay more but it’s still good value if you don’t mind commuting a bit with a standard yearly membership costing £170.00. The facilities are really nice and modern with handy green wristbands used to enter rooms and to use the lockers as opposed to keys, the fitness suite is one of the best I’ve used, the only slight downside being it can be pretty busy especially around 4/5 but that’s more applicable to weightlifters and can be avoided by going later or earlier in  the day.

Off Campus Options: If living within Ormskirk then it may be too much hassle to commute to and from Edge Hill but, there are options within the town. If you are interested in swimming then Park Pool, the council run leisure centre seems to be the main place to go, they also have a gym too.  If you are looking for just for fitness equipment then United Health and Fitness and Active Nation (formerly energie fitness) are both good options, Unite has a larger number of equipment in a larger space with a monthly membership costing £25 a month. Active Nation is the gym I use, it’s pretty small but is usually not too busy and is well maintained as well as having the cheapest membership fee I could find at £20 a month.

So there’s just a few options available to you if interested, also make sure you are paying for what you need, if you go a lot buy a longer membership, if your less consistent then maybe a pay as you go option is best, whatever you choose enjoy it and take it easy!

The Sports Centre – My Experience

In this blog, I wanted to talk about some reasons as to why I love the gym at Edge Hill University, I hope you enjoy.


The Equipment

On the first day that I arrived at Edge Hill University, I immediately went to The Sports Centre to check out what it was like. I have been really serious about the gym for over a year and so I was excited to see what their gym and fitness areas were like. Let’s just say that to say I was blown away  would be considered an understatement.

Bare in mind that I come from a very small place in Northern Ireland with an even smaller gym that could maybe fit 10 people into it at a time and had decent equipment. However, I was so happy with the gym at The Sports Centre as they had machines that I did not know existed and made my fitness journey even more exciting.

The Classes

Do you ever get those days when, you know you should go to the gym but you also know that you do not have the motivation to complete a really good workout? Well, worry no further because Edge Hill Sport Centre has a range of fitness classes that will keep you motivated and help you to enjoy fitness.

My personal favourite class is Yoga on a Tuesday night. It is so relaxing and soothing to do but it also challenges and stretches my body in ways that I did not know it could. However, if yoga is not your thing, you can always try other classes and see what you love! The Cafe

What do you do when you have smashed a workout or gym session and are in need of fuelling your body? Go and get yourself a drink and snack from the Starbucks in The Sport Centre, located just as you walk through the entrance.

Not only do they serve tea and coffee, the staff at the cafe also make protein shakes in a variety of flavours. They even have vegan options which is so difficult to come across in shops and cafe’s! Also, you can buy the protein powder in a bag and take it home with you so you can constantly fuel your body!

(PS, the cafe is also a great place to have a tea, coffee or snack when you’re waiting on someone to finish exercising. They have a great seating area with a lovely view of the swimming pool)

I really hope that you enjoyed this post. I am so thankful for the facilities at this gym and I of course need to give a mention to the amazing staff at The Sports Centre, making sure that every member feels comfortable, motivating them during their workouts and adapt the machines/facilities to meet their members needs.

Yoga! 🧘🏽‍♀️🕉

Hello! 

In my last post where I talked about the gym here at Edge Hill University, I mentioned yoga.  The sports centre provide a number of amazing classes and activities but Yoga 🧘🏽‍♀️ is by far my favourite.

They run Yoga on Tuesday at 8.20pm, Wednesday at 2pm and 6.30pm and Sunday at 9.30am. It lasts for an hour and the ones I go to are more of a relaxing, light yoga – it definitely brings some heat to your face and body but it’s nice, controlled stretches rather than painful poses! I can’t recommend it enough.

Yoga is included in the residential membership, which if you apply in the first four weeks you pay £80 for the rest of the year (see more here). It is quite popular so it’s best to book in advance to avoid disappointment. You can do this two ways, either by going into the sports centre and speaking to the reception, or the much easier way is to book it online! You can book any class or activity online and it will show you how many places are left – if there are no places available you will be put on a waiting list and be emailed when/if someone cancels.

This is what my current account looks like. The activity on the 17/3 is at an arrear status as I booked the class but failed to go, and I also forgot to cancel so I was charged the price of the class because of this. You have to scan your membership wristband to get into the gym or the studio so if you don’t turn up, it will register on your account so it’s important to cancel if you can’t make it, as I’m sure you understand. ✌🏽

All things Gym at Edge Hill University 🏋🏽‍♀️💪🏼

Hello!

Has anyone been to an Applicant Visit or Open day yet here at Edge Hill University? Did you get to have a look around the campus, more specifically, the gym? If not, don’t worry, everything you need to know about Edge Hill Sport is right here!

Timings and Memberships🕘💰:

The sports centre, this includes the gym, is open 7am – 10pm on weekdays, closing an hour earlier on Friday (9pm). The weekend timings are 9am – 5pm.
The swimming pool is open on Mondays and Wednesdays 7am – 9pm. Tuesday and Thursday’s timings are a little different. They are open 7am-9am then 11am – 9pm. Again, Friday they close an hour earlier: 7am – 8pm. Weekend timings are 9am – 4pm.

This year, they offered a ‘residential’ scheme for first years. You were entitled to four weeks free and after that, you can pay £80 for the year, or just opt out. An absolute bargain.

Residential membership

“Students that live on campus are entitled to try out our Premier membership for a trial period of up to 4-weeks from Welcome Sunday on 16 September until 13 October, with the option to then take out our NEW ‘Resident’ membership, which allows full Premier membership for the remainder of the 40-week accommodation contract. You will need to visit Reception in person to activate the trial period and subsequent membership. For our March / April intake of Nursing students, you are entitled to a similar offer to the above with a trial period until 28 April, with the option to then continue in paid membership until 14 September.”

 

What’s on offer? 🏋🏽‍♀️

The Edge Hill University sports centre provides so many opportunities for students. On the residential scheme, you can use every area the centre provides. They ask you to attend an induction to make sure you’re familiar with where everything is or how to use certain equipment – I found this really helpful. They also offer personal training sessions that you can book either alone, or in a group of 3.

My favourite is all the exercise classes they offer. They do everything, from Body Con, Box Fit, Circuits, HIIT to Kettlefit, Pilates, Spin, Step, Yoga and many more. The best thing I’ve found about these classes is they are accessible to all – they allow and plan for different levels of fitness so don’t ever feel afraid of starting a class. Everyone is really friendly and welcoming and the people who run the classes are really lovely and helpful.

Yoga is definitely my favourite class to take. I’ll do a more in-depth post about that next time but for now, I hope you have enjoyed reading all about the wonderful Sports Centre we have here at Edge Hill. Campus Sport

Hi everyone,

Today I thought I would talk to you all about campus sport here at Edge Hill’s Sports Centre. These are  fun recreational opportunities for students, staff and adults from the local community to get involved in on Campus!

  • The Get Active Programme – 

The Get Active programme provides a wide variety of regular recreational sports for you to choose from. These include Badminton, Netball, Football, Couch to 5K etc. Membership holders get this included but others can pay between £1 and £3 depending on the session. The aim is to have fun whilst exercising so that it doesn’t become a chore and you will continue to enjoy it!

  • Game On – 

The 5 a side football league has a student social league which runs during term time for campus sports users!

  • Volunteer –

Volunteer

Volunteering at the Sports Centre is a great way to get involved and gain new social skills, but also to enhance your CV.

  • Intro Courses

These introductory courses available with Campus Sport are a great way of improving your fitness levels slowly and steadily, at the right pace for you! These include pop up sessions throughout the week as well as a couch to 5K group!

  • Women Focused – 

Sometimes joining a gym can be a little daunting so I think women’s only sessions are a great way of starting! Women’s active is a group where you can find other women looking to get active, and there is also the women’s football side!

  • Free Events – 

Everyone loves a free event! These usually occur during freshers weeks, therefore whilst exercising you can have lots of fun with new friends. For example, in the past there has been pool parties, roller discos and zorbing!

Sports Memberships!

Hi everyone!

Some of you may have noticed that I have been writing a few posts on my time as being a member of the Edge Hill Sports Centre.

Main Building

I thought that today I would let you all know about the different memberships available – also members of the public can also become members, not just students!

You can have either a casual membership where you can just turn up and pay for the facilities you would like to use that particular day. Or, you can buy a contractual membership on either a monthly payment or a quarterly payment.  Students can get a 3 month membership for £55 or if you live on campus you can get a discount rate and pay £45!

All standard memberships include; a wristband, equipment hire, and access to the swimming pool, running track and fitness suite. Premier members also have extra access to; badminton and squash courts, sauna and steam room and also personal training!

I think that as students are on a budget, these prices are so reasonable and brilliant to maintain your fitness levels whilst at university. Also, the facilities that these memberships allow you to access are incredible!

Swimming at the Sports Centre

So I have been a member at the Sports Centre here at Edge Hill for just over a month now and whilst I am enjoying all of the facilities available to me as part of my membership, one thing I have really been loving is the  25 metre swimming pool!

Me and my friends have been going at least three times a week and we all enjoy it so much. There is a designated lane for those of you who want to really get to it! But we enjoy just swimming up and down and chatting at the same time. The pool is a really good size and even when it is busy you still feel like you have plenty of room without worrying about getting in someones way.

They also have started playing music in the swimming pool which adds an extra element of enjoyment. One thing I really enjoy is not being able to go on my phone for an hour or so and whilst I am getting really good exercise I  feel like I can switch off from uni work. The swimming pool also houses the health suite which consists of a steam room and a sauna available to premium members.

The facilities within are also excellent. There are showers and lots of changing space. As well as a machine that dries your swimming costume which I love! Also, there are also swimming lessons available to both children and adults whether you are a beginner at swimming or just need a refresher if its been a long time!

What can you use with your gym membership?

When coming to university, one of the main things I wanted to do was join the gym. I have been fairly active since I was young and have been going to the gym on and off since I was 14. Personally I really enjoy the gym as a way to keep fit and healthy but also to have a bit of time to myself and not be thinking about school work or anything else. I was very impressed by all the facilities that were available at Edge Hill’s Sport Centre and I was very excited to get my membership.

In September I payed £80 for a years membership, due to living on campus (however this may change), and the amount of things that are included within the package I was astonished. I thought it would be helpful to share some of the things I get and use within my membership so that others have a rough idea for when they come to Edge Hill.

  1. Full use of the gym- this is a given but the gym is open 7am till 10pm Monday through Thursday, then on a Friday it is open 7am-9pm, and finally on a weekend the gym is open 9am-5pm. These opening times are very inclusive and seem to work well for everyone, because if you want to go to the gym before a lecture it is possible or if you want to go later in the evening after you have done your work for the day, then again that is possible.
  2. Full use of the classes- this is subject to availability, but there are a wide range of classes that go on throughout the week. You can book them from week to week very easily online. And again this is all included in the membership. I have been to classes such as Zumba, Spinning, HIIT, and abs express, all of which the instructors have been very helpful but they also try and push you to the best of your ability.
  3. Personal training sessions- Each week I have the opportunity to have a 30 minute personal training session, again subject to availability. I love these sessions as I am able to different things in my workouts other than just what I normally do and also I am definitely pushed to the best of my ability. Each week I can chose what I want to focus on in my workout, and it is always a good challenge. 
  4. A workout plan- with my membership I was able to get a plan made for me. I had a meeting with my personal trainer and I was able to tell him my goals and then a few days later I had a number of different workouts on my app, which is also very useful because it tells you how many reps and the weight and also a rest time. 

Finally there are other things included in the membership that I have, such as use of the pool when it is open, you can also use the sauna and steam room. However these are things that I have not got round to using yet. But this just shows that there are such a wide range of opportunities and facilities the Sports Centre to fit whatever you would like to get involved with. There is something for everyone.

My day in the gym!

Happy Wednesday, it’s nearly the weekend. As I mentioned in my last post, I now have a membership at the Sports Centre located at Edge Hill therefore I thought I would share with you what I did in the gym today and how I am finding it in general.

I went to the gym and did 55 minutes and total and believe me I was tired afterwards! I suppose that shows you’re working hard though!

Firstly, I went on the bike for 30 mins and did 10K which I don’t really know if its impressive but I was super proud of myself. I then went on the rowing machine for a bit which was super hard and I will definitely be aching in the morning.  After that I went on the cross trainer which is one of my favourites, and from there you can see into the sports hall so I could watch the netball teams match which was fun! Finally, I went on the treadmill for 20 minutes which I really like as there is so many options as you can change the speed as well as the incline for a more intense workout. I really enjoyed it today and I felt great after.  In the next week or so, I’m going to attend some of the classes provided such as Zumba as I think that sounds great and also a really good one to do with friends!

The Sports Centre at Edge Hill!

As I mentioned in my previous post I now have a membership at the Edge Hill’s Sports Centre! I’m still at the beginning of my fitness journey so I will definitely be updating you on how that’s going later on.

But, I think that the facilities at the Sports Centre are incredible and there is so much to do that will suit everyone at all ages and abilities – you can take a look at their website by clicking here. So, I thought I would give you all a quick run through of what’s available!

 

The Sports Centre has two sets of changing rooms for both the fitness suite and the swimming facilities, both include showers. I also absolutely love that there are hairdryers and straighteners available too! There are lots of lockers as well so you never have to worry about leaving your belongings unattended.

The fitness suite itself has lots of equipment from treadmills to bikes and cross trainers, as well as a designated weights area. The gym equipment also has a TV screen so that you can stay entertained during work outs. For example you can watch Netflix and YouTube or even listen to the radio!

Every single day there are a variety of classes you can go to such as yoga, Zumba, HIIT and lots more. I would love to have a go at doing yoga and legs, bums and tums as they sound great! Classes are well priced for non-members as well at just £3.50!

The swimming pool is one of my favourite things, I’ve been a couple of times now and I love it in there! You can swim freely or in a single lane and there are also classes such as Aqua Fit. It’s a great way to guarantee you won’t go on your phone for a good hour and you can just switch off from uni work.

So far I’m really enjoying doing some exercise and I find it’s really good mentally as well. I’m finding that I am really looking forward to it each time I visit the gym! I’ll be sure to keep you all updated.
