EHU Women’s Rugby Union – They nearly beat the footballers at their own game!

Womans Rugby Union vs Football girls charity match

Sporting matches at Edge Hill are always fun and exciting. Competitions between rival universities always draw a crowd and we are proud to host some of the best games from rugby to volleyball. Sometimes, however, our games serve a different purpose.

On the 18th of April both the Women’s Rugby Union team and Football team took to the grassy pitches in support of the charity MIND. In memory of rugby coach Paul Reid the teams faced of in a day of fundraising and extraordinary sportsmanship.

The match itself, set amongst the lush summer sun was a huge laugh. The rugby women, head to toe in fancy dress, took on the bibbed footballers. We also had the amazing Scott Avis, of mens rugby union, took the field as referee. I’d like to give him a big shoutout for spending the whole day in the sun without any sunscreen.

But there is a serious point to this blog. The sense of community within our sports teams I believe is unmatched. These ladies deserve a massive round of applause for their tireless work organizing this event for the benefit of the noble charity.

They serve the community in ways that often go unseen and this blog would not be complete without mentioning them. If you would like to find out more about the charity check out this.

In total both teams raised £172 through donations, raffles and a cake sale. The total raised has been donated to MIND. Jess of EHU WRU says ‘It was a great day out, we thoroughly enjoyed it. I want to thank everyone for taking part.’ With all said and done the rugby women were only one goal behind at 4-5. But the score wasn’t what the day was about was it.
