Social Media VS Job Applications

Graduation is fast approaching for many 3rd year students, and with graduation comes the long search for jobs. Finding a job isn’t the easiest task, however, there is something very simple you can do that can help with the process, which is changing your social media.

The number one thing you need to know about applying for a job when you have a social media presence is that they will google your name. So you might want to consider googling your name and seeing what appears. An old twitter account that you haven’t touched in 5 years, delete it, an embarrassing facebook account you made, private it. This will help clean up your social media presence, making you more desirable to employers.

On the same vein, delete or untag posts that put you in a negative light. For example, a photo of you on a night out which you don’t even remember taking, or an embarrassing timehop. If you can imagine an employer disliking a post, it’s better just to private or delete it. Facebook’s ‘on this day’ feature is very handy for showing your embarrassing past that you might want to private.

Alternatingly, you could consider the privacy of your accounts. Social networks such as linkedin only work when public, so you might wanna evaluate which of your social media accounts you wish to be accessible by the public, and most importantly your future employer. That way with accounts such as Instagram, for instance, people can request access to see your posts.

Additionally, making sure your accounts are clean and presentable looking is important. Small things such as matching your profile pictures across all your social media accounts and having presentable cover photos makes a huge difference!

Don’t overshare, however, don’t be scared to post what you want. People don’t need to see who you’re annoyed at, but they might want to see what you have been up to lately. You’ve just got to remember to keep personal posts personal, while still having fun online.
