The (almost) A-Z of Edge Hill, Ormskirk and Lancashire

A – The Arts Centre, a great facility on campus to make the most of shows and performances and local talent

B – Blackpool, Blackpool is only around a 45 minute drive from Edge Hill and is definitely worth a visit during your time here

C – Cobble, one of the most popular coffee shops in Ormskirk, it’s a great place to meet up with friends or take your parents when they visit

D – Ducks, one of the main things that makes Edge Hill unique is the population of ducks, no matter what kind of day you’re having seeing a duck is sure to make you feel a little better

E – EHSU, Edge Hill Students Union are a service that can provide you with independent advice during your time at university, they are also responsible for organising events and have designated officers to ensure that students issues are raised and dealt with at the university

F – Formby Beach, one of the only places in the UK where you can see red squirrels in the wild, it is also a lovely beach to visit for the day. You can access Formby by car where it is around 20 minutes from Edge Hill or you can can travel by train or bus easily from Ormskirk

G – Go Portal, once you have your place at university this is where you will find everything from your course information, access to message boards to contacting facilities management to report any problems across campus. This is your go to place for information.

H – The Hub, the main centre of the university. You can get food, chill out, access a computer and the university holds events such as markets, housing fairs and careers days in here

I – Interviews, some courses such as teaching require you to attend an interview before giving you a place on your course. Interviews are a great opportunity to show what you can do whilst also giving you chance to look around the campus and get a feel for university life

J – Jobs, jobs are something you might want to consider whilst at university, there are plenty of job opportunities in Ormskirk and the transport links in the town mean that it is easy to travel to Liverpool to work also

L – Liverpool, from Ormskirk you can get a direct train to Liverpool that takes around 30 minutes. This means that it’s easy to nip there for shopping, food or to see sights such as the Cavern Club, Liverpool Museum or the Tate

M – Market, Ormskirk holds a market in the town every Thursday and Saturday morning, this gives you the chance to get fresh produces such as fruit and vegetables and bread as well as things like cakes, sweets and flowers

N – Nightlife, there are plenty of places to go out in Ormskirk whether you want to stay close to the university and go to the SU bar or expand into town and go to Alpine or Mustard. As well as this there is always the option of a night in Liverpool as well

O – Open days, open days are for any prospective student who wishes to look around the campus and see if it appeals to them and to allow them to get more information before applying to university

P – Parking, many people question whether or not they will be able to park on campus before applying to university, unfortunately it is not as simple as saying yes or no. Anyone who wishes to park on campus must apply for a permit which are approved on an individual basis

Q – Quidditch? As well as sport at university there are also lots of other clubs and societies you can get involved with, Edge Hill has a wide range including the Harry Potter, Circus Skills and Climbing and Mountaineering

R – Red Bar, the Red Bar is located in the Arts Centre and is a great meeting point in the university, they offer fresh pizzas and drinks which are perfect following a show or performance

S – Sports, there is plenty of opportunity to get involved in sport at Edge Hill. Whether you want to play competitively, join a society or just go to the gym there is something on offer for everyone

T – Transport, there are many options for transport in Ormskirk one of the most valuable things for me is the free bus that runs between the university and the town every 15 minutes. This provides you with access to busses and trains to places such as Liverpool and Wigan

V – Visit Days, Applicant visit days take place across the year and allow for students who have received offers to come and look around the campus at things such as accommodation and take part in taster experiences for their course

W – Wetherspoons, Rest assured that despite being a small town Ormskirk has a Wetherspoons. This is the perfect place to go before a night out or if you’re flat are fancying dinner out together on the cheap

X – X-Ray? For many people when coming to university finding a doctor or hospital is a big concern. The university help you register with a local GP during freshers week, there is Milton House that works with the university and provides GP services including GUM clinics that are available for students to access. As well as this there is Ormskirk Hospital within walking distance of the university for more serious issues

Z – Zzz, Looking after yourself whilst at university is one of the most important things. If at any point you don’t feel like yourself during your time here there is a designated health and well being team who can help you or refer you to get the help you need to strive. If you have a concern no matter how small you may feel that it is it’s important to go and see someone and they’ll be able to help you in some way
