I can’t honestly believe I am writing this post. Yep, I just finished dissertation week. This is where we cover the ins and outs of what I am calling dissertation-land. Word counts, structure, learning objectives, module outlines – it’s all there! I’m honestly a little worried, because for your dissertation you choose what you are going to write about and I just can’t settle on an idea. BUT, luckily, you are given a supervisor; someone is picked from the Media department to supervise you along your dissertation journey and they are the person you go to when you haven’t got a clue, like me! They’re still being assigned, so it’s a bit of a waiting game and in the meantime I am trying to narrow down my options for what I will write about! But when I know, you will too. How soon has this come around? Feels like yesterday I was walking onto the campus for the first time… Time flies!!!
Yes, it is deadline city. But I’m actually doing alright! I did have to pull an all night-er on Thursday night- I just couldn’t get my brain to work!!! But it was okay in the end, and after speaking to my lecturer, she let me know that even if I had been a little late with submission it would have been fine. This is one of the great things I like about university!!! The support, and understanding here is brilliant, of course it only comes through if you are a dedicated student and actually show up to lectures, but still, if you try they help and it’s very comforting to know. Well I’ve got 3000 words to be cracking on with for Tuesday! (It’s actually less because I’ve written some of it but I always exaggerate, especially to my Mum so I can get lots of cups of teas and sweets brought to me. It’s my greatest tip to prospective students!!! :)) Hope you’re all doing okay at college too! Its to my understanding that you’ve all recently finished sorting out your student finance? Rest assured that, although you do have to reapply to an extent each year, you don’t have to deal with ALL of those forms :)!
Well, back to the land of work I go!
…are very confusing machines! They’re an external sound recorder so when you’re producing someone you use that, connected to the boom mic, to get your diegetic sound. That’s where clapperboards come in etc. It’s always a good idea to use a Fostex as you work, even if you don’t think you’re going to use diegetic sound for that scene, and this is why: creating a soundtrack from scratch to sync to your film is THE hardest, most time consuming task ever. Imagine this, you need footsteps, trees blowing, leaves crunching…. you have to get all of that, and it’s got to be in sync with what you’ve filmed. I’m writing this blog post because today I had to do that very thing…. SO! When it comes to film making, and sound design, always ALWAYS record your sound there and then, and I recommend using a Fostex…you can hear the sounds as they record! And! You can hear any interference too! So you’re probably not going to need to re-record… Okay, that’s enough from me on sound… It’s time to go to sleep!
Yes! Always record sound as you work, even if you don’t think you’re going to use it later, because there is no worse, greater, or more time consuming task than going and re-recording sound effects to construct your own soundtrack. This is a task that I will be busy with this coming week, amongst my other student-y duties (such as essays, research etc.)! Not that I’m complaining…. haha But yes, HOT TIP of the week- always, always, record sound as you film!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It’s glorious! I’ve been lay in it doing a spot of reading. Not a lover of Horror movies, in fact- ironically, I’m absolutely terrified of them. BUT last week in the ‘Spectacles… (it’s a very long title)’ module, we discussed Horror in quite an interesting way! So, I’m doing some reading and to follow it up I may indeed watch a few Horror movies… See how this course has opened me up to new things??? ;P
Hope you’re all enjoying the GBW (Great British Weather) for once at least!
I slept last night, haven’t slept in ages. Anyway, I don’t have a lot to blog about to be honest, I’ve just been reading a lot I guess! I’m on the radio later so I will blog about that; final broadcast before Easter break too! Think I’m off for 3 weeks!!!! WOO WOOO WOOOOOO!
So I failed at getting to university today. A bad back, and a bust knee have got me bed ridden and I really needed to get in today. Absolutely gutted. But I’m going to do some more reading on Phenomenology to make up for it!!!
Ah, it is all good. My previous post outlined my anxiety for yesterday morning’s presentation. Well I can happily say said presentation went very well! Yipeee! No mark as of yet, but, I did get my mark for the 2nd assignment from the Employability Programme and guess what! I got a 1st! Yay! So yes, yesterday was a very, very, happy day! As has been today, although I have simply lay watching movies bathing in my happiness! Ha ha! Hope you’re all doing fabulously!!!!!!!!!!! This is such a joyous post!
So, I’ve got a presentation to do at 9AM tomorrow. It’s for the Employability Programme I do on top of the Media course. It needs to be about 8 minutes worth of me speaking but so far I’ve had it at roughly 8, 9 and the glorious 6 minute one I did. Urgh. I’m really nervous- and I don’t get nervous over these things. Once it’s done, good or bad, I’ll be high as a kite for having done it. But for now it’s worries, worries, worries, all the way!
I’m so tired, and unfortunately I’ve caught a nasty cold, so took a day off today. But! Luckily I haven’t really missed much as the wonderful technology that is Blackboard means that I can see the presentation slides for today’s lecture, and get a gist of what I’ve missed! Woo! So yes, I’m lay in bed sipping a cuppa soup reading about phenomenology < I don't know how to go about saying it mind! I'll let you know what it's all about once I've wrapped my head around it… Hope you're having brilliant Tuesdays!!!!!!!
