{"id":22,"date":"2025-03-14T09:09:00","date_gmt":"2025-03-14T09:09:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.edgehill.ac.uk\/foenews\/?p=22"},"modified":"2025-04-29T09:12:36","modified_gmt":"2025-04-29T09:12:36","slug":"child-of-the-north","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.edgehill.ac.uk\/foenews\/2025\/03\/14\/child-of-the-north\/","title":{"rendered":"Child of the North"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>We are proud to share the Faculty\u2019s involvement to the new Child of the North report which highlights the critical need to embed the arts and creativity in all school curriculums.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gavin Davenport, Knowledge Exchange Lead for Teacher Education and Professional Learning in our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/company\/faculty-of-education-at-edge-hill-university\/posts\/?feedView=all\">Faculty of Education<\/a>, contributed his research to the report which aims to reduce the significant North\/South divide in outcomes for children and young people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:22% auto\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.edgehill.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/hasgavin.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-268123 size-full\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>\u201cThis report is a call to arms for everyone concerned with children&#8217;s development to work together to provide vital opportunities. It highlights the value of frequent and diverse creative activities for every child, to enable them to flourish individually and contribute socially. These are too often lacking.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/company\/n8-research-partnership\/\">N8 Research Partnership<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/company\/centre-for-young-lives\/posts\/?feedView=all\">Centre for Young Lives<\/a> are calling for policy change and a cultural shift towards more inclusive education, with creativity as a core component, particularly for those with Special Educational Needs (SEN).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr Helen O\u2019Keeffe, Pro-Vice Chancellor and Dean of Education added:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:auto 22%\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p><em>As a Faculty of Education, we welcome and fully endorse the recommendations from the Child of the North Report. <\/em><em>We have been educating the teaching and education workforce for almost 140 years and our vision of \u2018<strong>working creatively with others to enhance life chances\u2019<\/strong> is at the heart of who we are as a working family. We focus relentlessly on harnessing the power of education to transform lives, every day, in everything we do with our students and partners.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The Faculty is one of the largest Initial Teacher Education providers in the country, and in March 2024, became the first higher education institution in England to be rated \u2018outstanding\u2019 by Ofsted in all three teacher education phases. We are therefore in a privileged position to support and influence the roll out of the recommendations of the report to the next generation of teachers. We are pleased to commit to:<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/\/www.edgehill.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/hok.jpg\" alt=\"Helen O'Keeffe\" class=\"wp-image-268122 size-full\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><em>Reflecting:<\/em><\/strong><em> &#8211; on our existing approach to creating a research informed culture of inclusive opportunity through arts and creativity within our Initial Teacher Education curriculum and identifying where this can be enhanced within all age phases and within our research.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><em>Inspiring:<\/em><\/strong><em>&nbsp;&#8211; our future teachers to&nbsp;design a broad holistic curriculum&nbsp;and extracurricular activities which embed creativity at their heart, through regular engagement with our local, regional and national cultural partners<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><em>Connecting: &#8211;<\/em><\/strong><em> our substantial network of cultural partners to our large network of schools and other education and community settings.
