FiN member Julia Clayton was runner- up in the Observer Anthony Burgess Prize for Arts Journalism 2026 . At the event at the Art Workers’ Guild in Bloomsbury, she received what she called ‘a fun trophy’ (modelled on one of the only prizes Anthony Burgess received, which was presented to him by Margaret Thatcher) as well as £500, a mention in the Culture section of the Observer and the review was published in the online edition of the paper, which can be found here: The art salon returns to Southport, and opera’s new north…

Also, one of Julia’s story from Edge Hill’s MA (‘Model Village”, set in Portmeirion) came in the top five in a competition run by Claret Press, an indie publisher based in Clapham, for political short stories.

Also a reminder that on Wednesday 27th May at 7pm Elizabeth Baines has a launch of her short story collection published by Confingo at the Saul Hey Gallery in Manchester – this is a free event, but you must book at this link here: Future Events | Saul Hay Gallery | Manchester There will be a reading and a Q&A with our very own Professor Ailsa Cox.

Keep an eye out for more news in June!
