My energy levels must have been a bit low after the conference paper in the morning \u2013 as I felt rather grumpy about the low quality of the songs in the mix.\u00a0 Today, I feel slightly more upbeat as I have just watched in on the big screen in an ever busier the press centre. Here\u2019s my thoughts on the show tonight (BBC3 @ 8pm). See what you think tonight\u2026<\/p>\n<p><b>01. Latvia<\/b><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"PeR - Here We Go (Latvia) 2013 Eurovision Song Contest Official Video\" width=\"580\" height=\"326\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/P4lwr-zMSnM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The two rappers\/singers from Latvia will put in an energetic performance tonight. You might think that they are a little too &#8216;Bejazzled\u2019 when it comes to their outfits.\u00a0 The song is catchy \u2013 and there are opportunities for you to join in \u2013 as the crowd in the venue do every time. Good effort, but probably not going through.<\/p>\n<p><b>02. San Marino<\/b><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Valentina Monetta - Crisalide (San Marino) 2013 Eurovision Song Contest Official Video\" width=\"580\" height=\"326\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/xi8mZ2ejLcE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Remember Carol Decker from T\u2019Pau? Well, she\u2019s not representing San Marino \u2013 but their singer, Valentina Monetta, is the spit of her \u2013 you know, back in the day.\u00a0 The fans are all over this song, and in the press centre it is currently third favourite.\u00a0 Not that necessarily means anything, as occasionally there is a lack of critical distance here.\u00a0 It\u2019s a nice song, and in a rather dull second semi-final it\u2019ll probably go through.<\/p>\n<p><b>03. FYROM<\/b><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Esma &amp; Lozano - Pred Da Se Razdeni (F.Y.R. Macedonia) 2013 Eurovision Song Contest Official Video\" width=\"580\" height=\"326\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-LwGGo5ZfF8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>I <b>love<\/b> this song \u2013 one of my pre-Contest favourites. It\u2019s a shame that something is getting lost in translation on stage. Esma (she) and Lozano (he) perform what you might think is a bonkers song, mixing gypsy influences with a bit of balladeering and dubstep. I thought it was a shoe-in to get to the final, but the mix of performers on stage doesn\u2019t quite work. Lozano does his thing, and Esma looks overwhelmed by her costume \u2013 rather unkindly referred to by some as a toilet roll holder. I\u2019ll be cheering it on!<\/p>\n<p><b>04. Azerbaijan<\/b><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Farid Mammadov - Hold Me (Azerbaijan) 2013 Eurovision Song Contest\" width=\"580\" height=\"326\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/r5egVzkZGTg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>This is one of the best performances of the week.\u00a0 A fab song, fantastic staging, and a singer who is irritatingly handsome. For some reason Farid can\u2019t seem to keep his top on during promotional appearances. I can\u2019t think why! Surely through to the final, and a top five finish should be on the cards.<\/p>\n<p><b>05. Finland<\/b><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Krista Siegfrids - Marry Me (Finland) 2013 Eurovision Song Contest\" width=\"580\" height=\"326\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/FdU02F9lT2g?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Pure pop fans, this one is for you (and me!). If you like Katy Perry then Krista is your girl. Pure fun, with infectious energy and a cheeky ending which, after you\u2019ve seen it a few times is a little contrived.\u00a0 When she gets though to Saturday I\u2019ll explain it why she finishes the song how she does\u2026<\/p>\n<p><b>06. Malta<\/b><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Gianluca Bezzina - Tomorrow (Malta) 2013 Eurovision Song Contest Official Video\" width=\"580\" height=\"326\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/8WmJXIR9xtw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Malta had something of a return to form last year, and made it through to the final.\u00a0 I think this will happen again tonight. If not only because Gianluca\u2019s effervescence will win you over, with a song that could very easily be on the radio in the UK.<\/p>\n<p><b>07. Bulgaria<\/b><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Elitsa &amp; Stoyan - Samo Shampioni (Bulgaria) 2013 Eurovision Song Contest\" width=\"580\" height=\"326\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/bExp3aNOFsE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Elitsa and Stoyan competed in the Eurovision back in 2007 and did very well.\u00a0 This song is a bit of a carbon copy of that, but I can\u2019t see it doing as well. Good energy and lots of drumming (that always does well at Eurovision). 50\/50 whether it goes through.<\/p>\n<p><b>08. Iceland<\/b><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Ey\u00fe\u00f3r Ingi Gunnlaugsson - \u00c9g \u00e1 L\u00edf (Iceland) 2013 Eurovision Song Contest Official Video\" width=\"580\" height=\"326\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/PtunhyMW1hM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Icelandic singer Eythor has a cracking voice, and the song is anthemic and builds in all the right places.\u00a0 A brave decision some might say to sing in Icelandic, but it shouldn\u2019t detract from the powerful vocal and the passion of the performance. At rehearsal yesterday he had a rather unflattering shirt on. Today he\u2019s styled it out with a waistcoat and pocket watch, and the visual impact is much better. Surely going to the final.<\/p>\n<p><b>09. Greece<\/b><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Koza Mostra &amp; Agathon Iakovidis - Alcohol Is Free (Greece) 2013 Eurovision Song Contest\" width=\"580\" height=\"326\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/G3k2MOJOkKg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Another song definitely going to the final. It\u2019s so catchy!\u00a0 The irony is not lost on us all here in Malm\u00f6 that the song is called <i>Alcohol Is Free<\/i>, when clearly it is not. A bottle of wine is thirty quid, up to eight quid for a beer, and don\u2019t start on the spirits! Good that I arrived with a bottle of gin!\u00a0 What\u2019s the saying: somewhere in the world it\u2019s gin o\u2019clock! \ud83d\ude00<\/p>\n<p><b>10. Israel<\/b><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Moran Mazor - Rak bishvilo (Israel) 2013 Eurovision Song Contest\" width=\"580\" height=\"326\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/rYuSe5h-rrg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Sorry, but it\u2019s taxi for Moran! Time for you to refresh your drinks and replenish the nibbles\u2026<\/p>\n<p><b>11. Armenia<\/b><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Dorians - Lonely Planet (Armenia) 2013 Eurovision Song Contest Official Video\" width=\"580\" height=\"326\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/JSs03Sp-4ME?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Double denim, people, double denim. \ud83d\ude00 I\u2019m feeling like this will go through to the final. There\u2019s always a rock number that makes it through, and I think that the strong vocal &#8211; and the fact that there aren\u2019t many rock numbers in the mix \u2013 this will see it through.<\/p>\n<p><b>12. Hungary<\/b><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"ByeAlex - Kedvesem (Zoohacker Remix) (Hungary) 2013 Eurovision Song Contest Official Video\" width=\"580\" height=\"326\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/UmjsIhihJMY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Performed by Byealex, this is another one of my favourite songs this year. I love the pace and the vibe, and the soft vocal. I love the animated backdrop of the staging, but my worry is that it really might bye-ByeAlex. Hope not.<\/p>\n<p><b>13. Norway<\/b><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Margaret Berger - I Feed You My Love (Norway) 2013 Eurovision Song Contest\" width=\"580\" height=\"326\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/gjm-kCOMaPY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>One of the best songs in this semi-final feels slightly let down by a lack of fire.\u00a0 No really \u2013 I think it calls for pyrotechnics, which are sadly lacking on the Eurovision stage. It\u2019ll go through for sure, even without the fireworks!<\/p>\n<p><b>14. Albania<\/b><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Adrian Lulgjuraj &amp; Bledar Sejko - Identitet (Albania) 2013 Eurovision Song Contest\" width=\"580\" height=\"326\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/_Pf-ZCI-UuA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t let the greasy-haired singer at the start of the song put you off:\u00a0 yes, it sounds like he\u2019s smoked 20 a day for years, looks like he hasn\u2019t been to bed for a week, and dances like a dad at a disco. Wait for the second singer \u00a0&#8211; he will give you some big-hair vocals!\u00a0 This song might be counted out by the earlier song from Armenia \u2013 or they might get through, which is my hunch.<\/p>\n<p><b>15. Georgia<\/b><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Nodi Tatishvili &amp; Sophie Gelovani - Waterfall (Georgia) 2013 Eurovision Song Contest\" width=\"580\" height=\"326\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/CvdcRmzuXKM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s the first appearance for this semi-final of the \u2018wall of fire\u2019. You will second guess when it will cascade from the rear of the stage. What was once an awesome effect \u2013 used to notable effect by Azerbaijan to win in 2011 \u2013 now seems overused and a bit contrived. Earlier in the week Paul Jordan (\u2018Dr Eurovision\u2019) predicted that this is the winning song for 2013. He will be insufferable if he\u2019s right! I don\u2019t think it will, but Nodi and Sophie give some welly, and it\u2019ll sail through to the final.<\/p>\n<p><b>16. Switzerland<\/b><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Takasa - You And Me (Switzerland) 2013 Eurovision Song Contest\" width=\"580\" height=\"326\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/fBGpqq2LFSQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>At the national final the performers, Takasa, performed The Salvation Army outfits. EBU bosses said that they couldn\u2019t do this on the stage at Eurovision \u2013 references to faith, religion, spirituality etc. aren\u2019t permitted. Look out for the oldest ever performer during this song, at 95 years young &#8211; good man yourself. The song is catchy and with the backing of the Sally Army it\u2019ll get through.<\/p>\n<p><b>17. Romania<\/b><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Cesar - It&#039;s My Life (Romania) 2013 Eurovision Song Contest Official Video\" width=\"580\" height=\"326\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/8pNEEb6dzi8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>I haven\u2019t used the phrase \u2018mad as a box of frogs this week\u2019. So I\u2019m going to now! My dear friend and colleague Ruxandra informs me that back home in Romania her compatriots are not entirely sure that Cezar will get to the final. This would be the first time that they have not, so it would be a bit of a scandal.
